Every 10 years, film lovers everywhere wait for the British Film Institute's Sight and Sound team to release their list of greatest films of all time. The decennial tradition dates all the way back to 1952, and for many decades, Citizen Kane reigned supreme. This year, there are many firsts—including a new number one.

Belgian film Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles is this year’s greatest film of all time. Jeanne Dielman, the movie’s subject, grapples with self-liberation and identity as a widowed mother and prostitute. Directed by Chantal Akerman, the movie is the first film directed by a woman to hold the top spot, and the first to ever even be in the top 10. But that’s not all that’s new.

This year marked the beginning of 2010 films being eligible for critics’ consideration, and many contemporary works have joined the likes of Vertigo, Singin’ in the Rain, and The Godfather. Jordan Peele’s Get Out, Barry Jenkins' Moonlight, Céline Sciamma’s Portrait of a Lady on Fire, and Bong Joon-ho's Parasite were all selected. As well, seven Black filmmakers were on the list, six more than there were in 2012’s list. And, for the first time ever, animated films have joined the ranks. Two of Hayao Miyazaki’s films, My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away, are 72nd and 75th, respectively.

You can find the entire list on BFI’s website here.

Beating out Vertigo for the number one spot is Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles, making it the first time ever that a film directed by a woman landed the number one spot or even made it into the top 10.

This year marked the beginning of 2010 films being eligible for critics’ consideration, and many contemporary works—like Get Out, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, and Parasite—have joined the classics.

Another first for this year: seven Black filmmakers were selected for the list, up from only one in the last list.

Animated movies have also been selected for the first time. Two of Hayao Miyazaki’s films, My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away, are 72nd and 75th, respectively.

With so many historic firsts for the prestigious list, it's all the more exciting to see what will come in 2034.

Destruction has been captured in action films in ways that can seem random and effortless to viewers. Audiences don’t bat an eye when they see trucks rolling on the highway, car roofs concaving, and vehicle hoods bending in half on impact. In reality, though, these “accidents” are carefully calculated and rehearsed feats of practical effects that defy the laws of physics. And often, teams of coordinators only have one shot to get it right. A video from Insider dissects different ways cars and other set pieces have to be meticulously modified to pull off these seemingly impossible and very spectacular stunts of destruction.

In the short video, special effects company JEM FX reveals its techniques for controlling chaos by using a Buick LaSabre as a case study. The team focuses on the car’s three pillars that support the weight of the roof, making scores in the metal to weaken the structure in specific areas to achieve certain types of damage. When they drop a 3,000-pound weight on top of the car, the areas they scored are the only areas with cinematically clean damage.

More stunts like explosions and launching vehicles are designed using rockets, ramps, cannons, and cable rigs. A stunt from Taken 3 involves a shipping container getting catapulted off of a semi truck's trailer and rolling down a highway onto cars. Thanks to two 12-inch nitrogen cannons on the trailer and two giant wheels welded to the shipping container, the team was able to pull off the multi-component maneuver.

Watch the video below to see how they made a bus run over a row of cars in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, made it look like a ghost was damaging a vehicle in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and many other practical effects.

Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd Tease New ’Back To The Future‘ Project Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd

“Wait a minute. Wait a minute Doc, are you telling me…we might be going back to the future again?” Less than a month after their heartwarming reunion at the New York Comic Con, Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd have fans talking once more; this time, about a new Back to the Future project.

On November 3, 2022, Lloyd tweeted a cryptic message: “I can’t say yet, but the future holds something very special for you…stay tuned!” The next day, Lloyd continued to fuel rumors by tweeting, “Great Scott. Stay tuned!” Lloyd’s third tweet shares a photo of him alongside BTTF co-star Fox with the caption, “If my calculations are correct, when this news hits 88mph…you’re gonna see some serious sh*t (on Instagram).” It seems Lloyd was referencing a mysterious BTTF-themed video both he and Fox posted to their Instagram stories. Lloyd later tweeted the video with a link to what seems to be a Back to the Future-related online store.

Even with all the secrecy, Lloyd was quick to quell rumors of a BTTF remake. One fan replied to his tweet with, “Please please don’t say you’re remaking BTTF,” to which Lloyd simply responded, “We are not.” If a remake of the 80s classic isn’t in store, then what is? The two stars are not yet revealing.

To add fuel to the rumors fire, both stars posted that same photo of the two of them on Instagram. Fox’s was captioned, “Doc and I are up to something heavy… @mrchristopherlloyd should we spill it?” Then, Lloyd seemed to respond with his post, captioned, “Wait, don't say anything yet @realmikejfox . We’ve still got time.” The comments are full of fans reacting to what this new project could be. Some are pleading for the stars to give fans a clue, while others are bemoaning a potential reboot.

What is for certain is that the link both actors shared allows for fans to sign up for any updates coming soon. After inputting their email and phone number, they’ll receive the vague text message, “Great Scott! You made it just in time. We'll let you know when the clock strikes… Stay ready.”

As many BTTF fans know, time and clocks are incredibly important motifs of the franchise. In particular, the clock on the Hill Valley Courthouse is significant. Notably in the first film, when the clock struck 10:04pm on November 12, 1955, the courthouse was struck with lightning, stopping its clock as well as finally sending Marty McFly back to 1985. On the mysterious new BTTF website, the background is filled with clocks. At first glance, it might seem to just be a replica of the famed frozen clock as seen in the franchise. Upon further inspection though, the clock reads around 10:08—not 10:04.

There’s no news yet on what this exciting new development to Back to the Future is, but keep your eye on the clock, and scroll below to see the posts that sparked the rumors.

Actor Christopher Lloyd sparked rumors online of a new Back to the Future project when he tweeted a series of cryptic messages.

Soon after, he and fellow BTTF co-star Michael J. Fox shared a vague BTTF-themed video. Lloyd later re-shared the video on Twitter, along with a link to a new website.

Even with all the secrecy, Lloyd was quick to quell rumors of a BTTF remake.

Both stars have yet to reveal what this exciting new addition to the classic 80s franchise is, but they are using Instagram to add fuel to the rumor fire.

Disney’s First Plus-Sized Protagonist Is a Ballet Dancer in New Short ‘Reflect’ Disney's Short Reflect's Main Character Bianca

A new Disney animated short, Reflect, features the studio’s first plus-sized protagonist as she battles self-doubt and body image issues through the art of ballet. The short shows that by looking beyond your reflection and finding your inner strength, you can find true beauty in yourself and achieve anything. Many viewers see themselves in Bianca, while others are using the short’s subject matter to open up broader conversation about representation in media.

The short starts with the main character, Bianca, warming up before her ballet class. As her classmates start to come into the room, Bianca stops. Her expression changes from blissful to embarrassed, and she reluctantly joins the others for their pliés. The teacher scolds Bianca, saying, “Tight tummy, long neck.” Disappointed in herself, Bianca turns to her reflection. As she looks, the mirror fades away into a splintered glass monster. She defeats the reflective colossus with confident choreography and the short ends with her smiling at her reflection.

Reflect is a part of Disney’s Short Circuit Experimental Films series, a program where anyone working at Walt Disney Animation Studios can pitch a short for a chance to have it made. Director Hillary Bradfield describes her short as a review of her own personal “body philosophy,” in an interview on Disney+. She explains, “I feel like I’m a very body positive person in principle, but when it’s on a personal level, it’s a lot harder to be body positive.” When deciding the setting of the microfilm, she says a dance studio was the obvious choice: “It’s a part of the craft to be looking at your posture and checking things in the mirror. So it just seemed like a really good way to put her in that environment where she has to look at herself and she doesn’t want to.”

Bradfield’s message and short animation are resonating with many fans online. One viewer reflects on her own time as a ballet dancer and says, “I remember feeling so out of place when no one was my size.” She highlights, “As a Plus Size Disney lover seeing this short made me cry because I'm finally seeing my body type represented on screen in Disney film.” Another viewer watches a portion of the film on TikTok and admits, “I would give anything to show this to my younger self and say it’ll be ok.” A review on Twitter says, “16 year old me needed this Disney short before I quit ballet because I didn’t want to be the fat girl in class anymore. I’m glad little ones will have this. 10/10 for Reflect!”

While there are several who are praising the Disney short, many are addressing that it leans too much on themes that reduce plus-sized characters to stories revolving around their weight. One comment on this TikTok review says, “I would like a plus size protagonist who just happens to be plus sized rather than that being the main point of her story.” Another echoes this sentiment, and adds, “[Why’s] it a short tho, we need a proper film with a plus size princess or something.”

“When people watch the short, I hope that they can feel more positively about themselves and how they look and feel okay about the tough parts of the journey,” Bradfield emphasizes. “You know, maybe sometimes you go to the dark place to get to the good place and that just makes the good place that much more beautiful.” It seems the director's sentiments are in the right place and it's good to have body-inclusivity in media, but there is still a long way to go in terms of proper representation.

You can watch the short film Reflect on Disney+ now.

A new Disney animated short Reflect features the studio’s first plus-sized protagonist as she battles self-doubt and body image issues through the art of ballet.

The short seems to be resonating with many fans online, with several seeing themselves Bianca, the film's main character.

Tokyo Cab Company Offers Rides With Ghost Girl From ‘The Ring’ To Celebrate Halloween Sadako Taxis in Tokyo to Celebrate Halloween

Movie franchises such as Friday the 13th and Scream might be on everyone's Halloween watchlists and horror film ranks, but nothing gives a real fright quite like Japanese Horror (aka J-Horror) films. One of the most popular scary movies to ever come out of Japan is Ringu (1998), which got an American remake in 2002 and gave us an iconic and eery character—Sadako, known as Samara on the U.S. version. Now, Sadako is back for a new movie, called Sadako DX. To celebrate its release during the spooky season, a Tokyo-based taxi-hailing app called S.Ride is offering trips featuring the bone-chilling ghost girl.

“Please enjoy the new-sensation taxi in which you can experience the world of Sadako before and during your ride,” states S.Ride. If you are brave enough to hail a Sadako Taxi, as they are known, the experience begins the moment you make your pickup request. The app will show images of Sadako and the message “I think she’s coming.” And no, the cab won't take you seven days to get to where you are.

Once it arrives, you'll see her on the car’s outward facing digital signage, on the rear door. Inside, you can take the risk and use the AR feature on the ride-hailing app to see her coming out of the screen behind the driver's seat. Since Sadako would very much like to have you as a victim, she wants to make sure you make it soundly to your destination before coming for you. That's why she also appears on a seasonal safety video shown in the car's display.

For those who simply say “nope” to a Sadako Taxi, don’t worry; this is an entirely optional service. They are limited to 50 cabs in Tokyo and the campaign will run from October 24 through November 6. On top of this, the Japanese ghost girl is also celebrating Halloween with a festive (and less scary) greeting window card that will be on some cabs on October 30 and 31.

If a Sadako Taxi doesn't fill your scare quota, perhaps the new film starring the iconic ghost girl will. Sadako DX is slated for an October 28 release in Japan.

S. Ride, a Tokyo-based taxi-hailing app, introduced a Halloween service called Sadako Taxi—starring the iconic ghost girl from The Ring.

Get a First Look at ‘The Little Mermaid’ Poster Featuring Halle Bailey as Ariel

Disney made a big splash this year when it released a trailer for the live-action version of The Little Mermaid. It was a historic occasion; singer and actor Halle Bailey was revealed to be taking on the role of the first Black Ariel, and little girls are so happy about it. Now, they’ve got a new reason to be excited all over again. Bailey just revealed the first official poster for the film.

The poster shows Bailey (as Ariel) looking longingly toward the surface of the water, which essentially sets the whole story in motion. Her red hair flows as her shimmering iridescent tail is draped over rocks and onto the ocean floor. All at once, the image captures the beauty and magic of the story by recalling the 1989 animated film while whetting our appetite for what’s to come.

In addition to sharing the film poster, Bailey also revealed the date of its premiere. “Words can’t describe how immensely honored I feel to play the mermaid of my dreams, Ariel in Disney’s The Little Mermaid,” she tweeted. “Come under the sea with me, in theaters May 26, 2023.”

Disney has a film poster for the live-action The Little Mermaid to accompany the teaser trailer it released earlier this year:

Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd Have Emotional ‘Back to the Future’ Reunion at New York Comic Con Michael J Fox and Christopher Lloyd Reunite at New York Comic Con

This year's New York Comic Con was full of exciting announcements and sneak peeks into upcoming releases. However, not everything at the convention celebrated what was happening next; there was another special event that celebrated an iconic piece of cinema from the mid-1980s. Canadian American actor Michael J. Fox reunited with American actor Christopher Lloyd in a special Back to the Future reunion, celebrating the immensely popular trilogy of movies.

Fox skyrocketed to fame for his performance as Marty McFly, the 17-year-old teenager who accidentally traveled back in time to the 1950s; and Lloyd played the eccentric scientist “Doc” Brown, responsible for building the time machine. Thirty-seven years after the release of the first film in 1985, both of the stars reunited in front of a crowd of overjoyed fans. Fox walked out first, the symptoms of his Parkinson's disease clear for the audience to see, and Lloyd joined him just a few moments later with an affectionate hug. The two were greeted by a standing ovation.

Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease—a progressive disease that affects the brain and body—in 1991 when the actor was just 29. Although the illness has worsened over the years, he has been open about the struggles and remained positive about his life. Lloyd has been a source of support for Fox throughout the process—a testament to their close friendship. “Parkinson’s is the gift that keeps on taking—but it’s a gift, and I wouldn’t change it for anything,” Fox said. “People like Chris have been there a lot for me, and so many of you have. It’s not about what I have, it’s about what I’ve been given—the voice to get this done, and help people out.” Fox's foundation The Michael J. Fox Foundation is dedicated to funding research on Parkinson's Disease and improving the quality of life for those who have it.

Disney is releasing a live-action version of The Little Mermaid and giving fans a first look. The trailer is making waves, particularly among Black girls who are so excited to see Halle Bailey take on the role of the first Black Ariel. Parents are sharing heartwarming videos of their children’s reactions to seeing Bailey, and they demonstrate just how powerful on-screen representation is.

The videos show the girls beaming as Bailey appears in the trailer. “I wanna watch it!” One says. “I think she’s brown,” another 3-year-old exclaims in a video, smiling ear to ear. “Brown Ariel is cute.” There are many more of videos similar to these that are going viral on social media, all thanks to the recent release of the trailer. Since it premiered about a week ago, it has had over 16 million views.

Unsurprisingly, there has been a backlash towards Bailey’s casting. Alongside hashtags of #representationmatters and #Blackgirlmagic is #NotMyAriel, with people saying that casting a Black actor is a departure from the original Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale which was released in Denmark in 1837.

Before Bailey was cast, there has been only one other Black actor as a Disney princess: Anika Noni Rose as the voice of Tiana in The Princess and the Frog (2009). Bailey understands the importance of her role—especially as someone who was “obsessed” with the 1989 The Little Mermaid growing up. “I want the little girl in me and the little girls just like me who are watching to know that they’re special, and that they should be a princess in every single way,” she shares. “There’s no reason that they shouldn’t be. That reassurance was something that I needed.”

The Little Mermaid will be released in theaters on May 26, 2023.
