The war in Ukraine has ravaged the country for over 300 hundred days. During this time, Ukrainian artists have found both a comforting space and a platform for their unbreakable spirits in their creations, which range from paper art and photography to large installations and heartbreaking illustrations. Now, the strength of the Ukrainian people will make it to one of the world's biggest stages via an empowering outfit. Miss Ukraine, Viktoria Apanasenko, has unveiled the costume she will wear at the 2023 Miss Universe pageant, and it truly encapsulates her homeland's relentlessness.

The costume, titled Warrior of Light, was brought to life by Ukrainian designer Lesia Patoka of Patoka Studio. The project took her four months, which included extended periods with no electricity and having to work by candlelight and fighting the cold as the sirens wailed in the streets. “In this image, there is a reference to Archangel Michael, the guardian angel, who protects Ukraine with a sword,” writes Patoka. “Viktoria has a weapon in her hands, her body is in stylized armor, while at the same time she brings light through this total darkness, metaphorical and literal, that has come to our lands with the aggressor.”

Rather than putting the pain in the spotlight, the team behind the costume went for an outfit that represented valor and hope for a brighter future. “In this difficult time for our Motherland, we thought for a long time: what should be the image that symbolizes our country? What ‘message' should he carry to the whole world? What should its details tell about? We even held a vote among the public for how they want to metaphorically see our country: to recreate the tragedy of the Ukrainian present or to show Ukraine in a bright image that will demonstrate the Ukrainian spirit and strength of our people. The majority will vote for the second version,” said Anna Filimonova, president of the Miss Ukraine Universe contest.

These choices informed the final design, which is comprised of five elements that marry high fashion and Ukrainian traditions. Apanasenko dons a golden jumpsuit that emulates a full-body armor. On top of it, she wears a white dress with puffy sleeves and a skirt made out of 10 meters (32 feet) of fabric. The most striking part is the wings, which the designer describes as “scorched in battle, but unbroken.” Encased in blue and gold armor, they are decorated with gleaming motifs. Ukraininan corn makes an appearance both on the headpiece and the lower part of the wings.

“In this costume, I wanted to put the idea that war cannot break our strength and discolor our hearts,” Apanasenko wrote on Instagram. “Even on a fire, like a Phoenix, Ukraine will blossom and shine with bright rays of kindness and faith.”

Apanasenko will wear the costume at the Miss Universe gala, which will take place in New Orleans on January 14, 2023. While the winner of the National costume contest is still up in the air, she has achieved a victory in becoming a symbol of resilience.

Dr. Martens is known for its iconic footwear and, in the past, the company has married its designs with classic art by collaborating with Tate Britain. Now, Dr. Martens has a new artistic collaboration with the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and together they're bringing the art of Japanese master Katsushika Hokusai to the masses. On November 26, limited edition boots, shoes, and a backpack adorned with his artwork were released to the public.

The Japanese ukiyo-e painter and woodblock artist saw his international popularity skyrocket after Japan opened up its borders in the 1850s. His best-known work is his series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji. Of the series, by far the most popular work is The Great Wave Off Kanagawa. Thus, it seems fitting that this iconic print adorns the 1460 leather lace-up boots, arguably Dr. Martens' most iconic shoe.

Retailing for $180, the boots see the swells of the wave come crashing down on the front of the shoe. The neutral background allows the blue waves to really pop and make these boots a true conversation piece. The 1461 leather oxford shoes, which retail for $140, have a more subtle approach and feature Fuji from Gotenyama at Shinagawa on the Tokaido, from the Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji. A full landscape in muted pastels moves across the length of the shoe, almost making it a sculpture to view from all angles.

If footwear isn't your thing, you can still get in on the collaboration thanks to the beautiful leather backpack that also features The Great Wave Off Kanagawa. The limited edition bag is made from Masterpiece leather, which is textured to mimic the finish of a canvas. The backpack, which retails for $210, features both straps and handles and antique gold hardware.

So whether you are searching for a gift or just want to treat yourself, Dr. Martens and The Met have put together a mini collection that would wash over any art lover's heart with a wave of joy.

Growing and maintaining a beard and mustache is an art that some take very seriously. So seriously, in fact, that there is an annual competition that celebrates epic facial hair. The 2022 Honest Amish National Beard and Moustache Championships has announced the winners of its November 12 competition in Casper, Wyoming. Photographer Greg Anderson was there to document the incredible beards and mustaches that graced the competitive contest.

Jono Gross won the Best in Show title for his mustache, and it's easy to see why; the ends of his strawberry-blonde mustache were curled into perfect circles. But from Anderson’s photos, the competition looked fierce. More than 200 people showed off their facial hair over four main categories: mustaches, partial beards, full beards, and craft. Other entrants included folks with woven beards and even non-hair sculptural pieces. Sommer Hibbler created a steampunk-inspired piece using coils, springs, and chains. The awe-inspiring creation won her first place in the craft category.

The 2022 competition may have also broken a world record. During the event, participants stood side by side and clipped their beards together, resulting in a beard chain that was 150 feet long. If accepted by the Guinness World Records, it would more than double the current record for the longest beard chain, which is 62 feet six inches long set in Germany in 2007.

Fans of The Simpsons know that the long-running TV show is a seemingly infinite source of memes for every occasion. It's easy to catch yourself organically quoting favorite episodes or replying to a message with an image from the show. However, few memes are as universally relatable as the gif of Homer quietly backing away into a wall of bushes. Now, Adidas has paid tribute to this iconic graphic by turning it into limited-edition Stan Smith sneakers.

This isn't the first time The Simpsons have inspired a shoe collaboration. In 2020, Vans launched a whole collection to celebrate the legacy of this animated family, and even Adidas itself introduced a fuzzy version of its Superstar sneakers inspired by Marge‘s blue hair. This new shoe, unlike the others, has a fan base that goes beyond the show itself. Its meme status makes it extra exciting for Simpsons fans and sneakerheads alike.

The Homer bush meme has its origins in the 16th episode of The Simpsons' fifth season, titled “Homer Loves Flanders.” After Ned Flanders invites Homer to a big football game, they become good friends, although Homer turns increasingly overbearing. One day, he just slides through the foliage dividing their houses—as opposed to calling on the door—and walks in on him playing with his children. After lying to Homer about not being able to hang out that day, Homer fades back into the bushes.

As opposed to other The Simpsons sneaker collaborations, these seem to have a more elegant edge, sticking to a mostly white and pristine aesthetic with added green details. Homer's name appears on the side of the shoe in gold letters, and there's a portrait of him on the tongue below the Adidas and Stan Smith artwork. However, the true star of the show is the wooly recreation of the meme on the back of the shoe, in all of its yellow and green glory.

Since there has been no official announcement so far, it's unknown when they'll come out or how much they'll cost. Nevertheless, the possibility of Homer's wackiness becoming a staple of our outfits sounds very exciting.

If you happen to forget your clothes at Wansho Laundry in Taiwan, rest assured that they'll be put to good use. For two years, laundromat owners Chang Wan-ji and Hsu Sho-er have been curating stylish ensembles and sharing their outfits on Instagram (with the help of their grandson) using the items left behind at their shop. Layering chunky sweaters and oversized button-downs, and pairing them with trousers and skirts, they pull off a range of eclectic styles.

With each new photoshoot, Chang and Hsu, who are both in their mid-80s prove that it's never too late to become fashion icons. Their popular Instagram account has well over 500,000 followers and it's easy to see why. Not only do the elderly couple expertly pair abandoned garments with the right counterpart, but they also model their finished outfits with enviable ease. From coordinating pinstripe blazers and pants to wearing all neutral colors, they confidently demonstrate how clothing can be both empowering and fun.

Most of these photoshoots take place in Wansho Laundry itself, offering a glimpse into where they find their items. Most of the time, Chang and Hsu smile gleefully at the camera, clearly enjoying their creative outlet.
