Ukrainian paper artist Eugenia Zoloto creates intricate cut-out illustrations, meticulously made by hand. Inspired by Russian literature, dreams, and the secretive inner thoughts of people, the delicate works of art often merge fantasy with nature. From florals and vines to ethereal portraits, each piece has its own enchanting quality and story to tell.
Having been creating paper art for 5 years, the mother-of-two sometimes struggles to find the time for her creative passion, with larger pieces taking up to 7 hours to complete. However, Zoloto finds that working at night is “the best time for creativity.” Each silhouette requires a steady hand, absolute precision, and a lot of patience. Zoloto reveals on Instagram: “Sometimes I just can't believe it is done, and all by my hands.” Every tiny incision is expertly carved from various colors of paper—mainly white, black, red, and green—using an X-acto knife.
Zoloto’s paper flowers, insects, and animals often contain narratives within their complex lines. For example, in one piece, a portrait of a girl features various types of pastries within her flowing hair, perhaps symbolizing her desires for something sweet. Other pieces are inspired by the handmade art of the artist’s grandmothers, such as a range dresses featuring ornate lace patterns. Zoloto fondly recalls, “They sewed doll dresses for me, made amazing national Ukrainian embroideries on the cloth…I loved to watch them so much.”
