Everyone could benefit from practicing mindfulness. However, with so many distractions that come with modern living, it can be difficult to focus on the here and now. Well, take a look at some of Lyès-Olivier Sidhoum‘s hanging sculptures and you may be reminded of the importance of being in the moment. His ongoing series titled Celestial Sculptures explores spirituality and mindfulness through a reflective lens.
Shaped like large discs, these hanging fixtures are displayed in a variety of arrangements. Some are kept as a single piece, while others are linked together in a straight line. In addition, their colors vary from pale blue hues to warm browns—echoing the colors found in our natural environment. “[My sculptures] are a meditative door to focus on your awareness,” Sidhoum explains to My Modern Met. “I use celestial colors because I'm fascinated by nature and sky nuances. I love observing the sky, clouds, sunrises, and sunsets. Moreover, we all share the same unique sky. It is a symbol of unity, uniqueness, infinity, and spirituality.”
The specular effect is crucial to these artworks. Sidhoum wants his viewers to find solace in the opalescent exteriors of these life-size pieces, focusing on the array of colors as well as their reflections. “It's important to see our reflection, our interior, our living space inside these works,” Sidhoum says. “It's nice to see our present moment impacted by the colors of the work. The wall sculptures look very glossy. They shine like crystals.” Although it is hard to grasp their opalescent effect in photographs, it is clear that between their geometric shape and subtle colorations these installations promote a sense of tranquility.
