What's better than your first cup of coffee for the day? Maybe your first paycheck, or even the thrill of landing your first job. It's no wonder that a video of Joe Sullivan receiving his first paycheck and the infectious joy of his response has gone viral.

Sullivan was born with Down syndrome and was hired by Bitty and Beau's Coffee Shop in Melrose, Massachusetts, this past summer. But before getting his first gig as a “caller” for coffee orders, Sullivan visited the shop on an almost weekly basis with his mom. He was eventually given a ‘future employee' pin by the shop, and, according to his mother, he was “smitten,” and wanted in immediately.

Sullivan worked his first shift at the end of July. He has a unique way of calling customers' orders; rather than saying their names, he calls out the playing card that matches each customer's order. It's a far better method for anyone with communication difficulties.

After two weeks, Sullivan was handed his first paycheck, and the spontaneous delight that burst forth from him as he received the check was captured on video. “Joe's on cloud 9—he got his first paycheck!” the caption to the video reads. According to his mother, Joe was so ecstatic about the whole thing. “He wasn’t concerned with how much it was for. He loves going there to work.” Joe is saving his money and plans to do some holiday shopping with his first earnings.

People around the world are supporting Joe and his joy through their comments and responses to the video. There is also overwhelming support and enthusiasm for Bitty and Beau's inclusion policy, and their determination to offer employment without discrimination.  As employers, Bitty and Beau really believe in their people. “Our employees are trailblazers, paving the way for people with disabilities to be seen as valuable members of society and the workforce. Thank you to everyone who visits our shops and believes in our team,” the franchise writes in a Facebook post.

As its tagline states, Bitty and Beau's is more than a cup of coffee—it's an experience. The founders, Amy and Ben Wright, also call it a human rights movement disguised as a coffee shop. They have four children, Lillie, Emma Grace, Beau, and Bitty. Lilly is on the autism spectrum and Bitty and Beau have Down syndrome. Because well over 80% of people with disabilities are unemployed in the U.S. and statistics are even higher globally, the Wrights set out to create a path for people with disabilities to be valued, accepted, and included in every community. There are now 23 Bitty & Beau coffee shops across the U.S., all of which employ people with disabilities.

Being excluded from a workplace because of neurological or developmental differences can be detrimental to a person's mental health and self-esteem. In this way, Bitty and Beau's is changing lives and offering opportunities. People like Sullivan can now contribute with pleasure and purpose, and offer the best of themselves to the world.

At the end of the 1960s, Black people in America were still excluded from places of relaxation and recreation like public swimming pools due to discriminatory segregation practices. In his beloved his children’s program, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Fred Rogers addressed this huge issue in a subtle but incredibly smart and meaningful way. In episode 195 broadcast on May 9, 1969, Rogers, a white man, soaks his feet in a small pool. When Officer Clemmons, a Black police officer, comes by for a visit, Rogers invites him to join him poolside. “It’s so warm, I was just putting some water on my feet,” Rogers tells Clemmons. “Would you like to join me?”

Officer Clemmons seems, at first, hesitant to take up Rogers' offer. He responds by saying how enjoyable the water looks. “But I don’t have a towel or anything,” Clemmons says, and Rogers reassures him that he can share his own towel. “Okay, sure,” a beaming Clemmons replies. He then takes off his shoes and socks and puts his feet beside Rogers in the small pool. The two men wash their feet together for viewers all over the country to witness. This small act on public television embarked the big job of challenging racial stereotypes and sending a very clear message to the world. “Around the country, they didn’t want Black people to come and swim in their swimming pools, and Fred said, ‘that is absolutely ridiculous,’” explains François Clemmons, who played Officer Clemmons.

The scene from this episode is disarmingly simple with two men sharing time together as they cool off on a warm day. Despite, or even because of, the politics of the time, Rogers and Clemmons were really showing people across the country that a Black man and a white man could sit side by side and share not only the same water but also the same towel to dry their feet. This casual gesture of warmth and friendship effectively highlights the narrow and discriminatory politics of the time that denied Black people access to swimming pools, leisure opportunities, and other places in society.

The Civil Rights Act came into being in 1964, but public spaces at the time of the episode were still challenging for Black people to enter, because of white prejudice. Segregation was no longer legal, though many white people were still resistant to the new laws that were inclusive of Black people in public spaces. A year before the episode aired, Martin Luther King had been assassinated and racial tensions in the country were on the rise.

Clemmons speaks about his experience on the show and Rogers' attitude to race. “My being on the program was a statement for Fred,” he explains. “I have always felt a policeman is going to be the most dangerous person in the neighborhood, so to have me playing a police officer, I was tremendously hesitant. But there was something reluctant about Fred, to let go. And I said ‘Mr. Rogers, I would be very happy to be on your program, as long as it doesn't interfere with my singing.'”

Clemmons, a trained opera singer, worked together with Rogers on Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood for 25 years. He made a final appearance on the show in 1993, during which he and Rogers recreated the pool scene, and Clemmons sang “Many Ways To Say I Love You.” In this episode, Rogers made an even more significant gesture; he took the towel and dried Clemmon’s feet himself.

In an episode of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Fred Rogers challenged the segregation of the 1960s by inviting Officer Clemmons, a Black police officer on the show, to share a pool with him.

The iconic pool scene was recreated in 1993 at Clemmons’ last appearance on the show, during which he sang “Many Ways to Say I Love You.”

Language is a powerful tool but not immune to amusing mishaps. Sometimes, there's nothing funnier to native speakers of another language than when English speakers get pronunciations wrong. YouTuber Feli from Germany has taken on the task of teaching English speakers how to correctly pronounce 15 of Germany's most iconic brand names. We know these brands so well and yet most of us don't know how to pronounce them properly.

Feli, a Bavarian ex-pat living in Cincinnati, Ohio, shares how to say German brand names in an informative YouTube video. German cars are sold all over the world, and each has a distinct and familiar identity. She explains the interesting story behind the Audi brand, a name which, as Feli points out, most of us mispronounce. In 1904, August Horch founded a company called A. Horch & Cie Motorwagenwerker Zwiekau. When he left the company and founded a different car company, he couldn't call it Horch again. The name Horch actually means listen in the imperative German form, so Horch looked to its Latin translation and found that it was audi. Thus, the popular car company found its name.

Adidas is the second-largest sports manufacturer in the world, yet the way that Germans pronounce it is different from English speakers. The company was founded by Adolf Dassler, whose nickname was Adi, so the brand name is based on his nickname and the first three letters of his last name. Dassler founded the company at his mother's house after returning from World War I, and it played a major role in developing the spiked running shoe. Dassler founded another company with his brother in 1924 called the Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory, but they split after a fight. His brother went on to start Puma, now a major Adidas rival.

Other pronunciations up for our correction are Volkswagen, Jägermeister, the grocery store Aldi, Deutsche Bank, appliance producer Miele, Haribo, and Lufthansa, the second-largest airline in Europe. But despite these mispronunciations, the German and English languages actually have more similarities than differences; German was the root language for the development of English.

Staying cool in summer can be a real challenge, especially with the high cost of air conditioning. Luckily, designer Yael Issacharov has circumvented our guilt of having the AC on all day by designing a system that needs no electricity at all. Issacharov has pulled inspiration from traditional Palestinian cooling systems and Egyptian architecture to bring us elegant and ecological air conditioning that adds an element of timeless grace to the idea of cooling down. With Issacharov's design, you can chill in your house or office and not worry about the cost or environmental impact.

The innovative system is called Nave, and it's made from terracotta tiles. When combined with water flow, they work together to cool spaces in a building. The main focus of the project is the adaption of the system to the surrounding walls, transforming them from a passive factor to an active one. As the water moves through the terracotta, it becomes a vapor when it collides with the heat of the surrounding air. The heat is absorbed, cooling the water and the entire system so the surrounding air of the room is chilled as a natural consequence.

Nave is customized and modular, meaning the shape and sides are adjustable according to your space. The units are free-standing and mountable so they can be attached to any part of a building. They are highly user-friendly and don’t take much interaction to make them work; they can be turned on and off, paused, and the temperature and humidity presets can be adjusted whenever you need a temperature change.

Designer Yael Issacharov has designed a unique terracotta air conditioning system called Nave that needs no electricity at all.

Nave is based on traditional Palestinian and Egyptian cooling methods and works by flowing water through the hollow part of the permeable terracotta walls to create a vapor.

Issacharov's design carries an understated, sustainable, and stylish aesthetic that will cool any modern building or home.

Monty Cocker says he's not a superhero, just a “regular hero.” The 4-year-old’s standards for hero status are pretty high; but, to his mother, he is more than qualified for the superhero position. Just a day after learning how to call the paramedics in case of an emergency, Monty used his new skill to save her life.

On August 26, 2022 in Tasmania, Wendy Cocker, a registered nurse, sat down with her son and taught him how to dial 000 (Australia's version of 911). They had just visited the ambulance tent at the AgFest—an annual agricultural field days festival organized by youths—and she thought, “Gee, I really need to teach Monty how to do it.” Cocker is prone to seizures, and she wanted to make sure that Monty knew what to do if she had a fit in his presence. She took him through the steps to make the call from both a locked and an unlocked phone, in case of any unforeseen emergency. The next day, Cocker wasn't feeling too well, and as she tried to reach her husband on the phone, her body went into full seizure.

Monty responded immediately, using his new skill to call the paramedics, who arrived straight away to help his mother. During the call, Monty communicates clearly and concisely, and tells the operator, “Mummy fell over.” A few second later, after confirming his age, Monty says, “My dog always woofs at people.” The reassuring operator asks if the dog is friendly, and Monty replies, “Yeah,” to which the operator says, “They'll be fine, then.”

Intensive care paramedic Danielle Masters says that when she and the team arrived at the house, they saw little Monty on the phone, and his mum on the floor. “He was just so calm and he'd just followed all the instructions that the comms had told him to, which I thought was really amazing,” she explains. Monty was able to answer all their questions and tell the team what had happened, and they eventually figured out that his mum may have had a seizure. Masters says that in her 15 years of work as a paramedic, it is the first time a 4-year-old has made a call to an ambulance. “I was actually amazed with how he actually knew that that was something that he needed to call an ambulance for,” she admits, “and then actually know how to call an ambulance.”

Later, Monty was reunited with the paramedic team that arrived to save his mom, and he was awarded a special certificate of appreciation. Masters says she was inspired to teach her own children the same skill, and she thought about breaking the learning process down into sequential steps for them. That evening, she asked her own 4-year-old if he knew how to call an ambulance.

As this inspiring story of the 4-year-old hero Monty becomes known, it's a great reminder to parents around the world to teach their children simple actions that will save a life. They, too, might achieve at least regular hero, if not superhero, status.

Australian mother Wendy Cocker taught her 4-year-old son Monty how to dial “000” (similar to 911 in the U.S.) in case of an emergency.

The very next day, she had a seizure in front of him and he knew exactly what to do.

Monty was rewarded with a certificate of appreciation from the paramedic team that responded to the call.

Meet Fenrir, the friendly feline who has officially been named the world’s tallest living domestic cat, as confirmed by Guinness World Records. With this title under his belt, this cat can certainly stand tall. But there’s actually even more for him to be proud of. The almost 3-year-old kitty is a beloved therapy cat.

Fenrir’s human, Dr. William Powers from Farmington Hills in Michigan, is a family physician and HIV specialist with his own medical practice where the cat works as a therapy animal. He adopted Fenrir when he was just 12 weeks old. Though his record-setting height has been a bit of a surprise, it was already known that the cat would get bigger because of his breed. Fenrir is an F2 Savannah Cat—a cross between a domestic cat and an African serval—a breed that became popular at the end of the 1990s and was recognized by The International Cat Association (TICA) in 2001.

Fenrir, who is of the F2 generation, has a serval grandparent and is the offspring of the F1 generation female.  Fenrir’s grandfather—a serval named Kongo—was a tall wild cat that provided the genetics for his astonishing height. Even with this impressive heritage, Fenrir is tall for his breed. He’s 18.83 inches (47.83 centimeters) tall, while the average is typically 14 to 17 inches tall.

Dr. Powers tells My Modern Met that people often complain about the records being unfair, because Fenrir is a Savannah cat. “Guinness’ rules are for any cat to compete in a cat record, the cat must be a recognized breed by The International Cat Association. Under TICA's laws, only F2 Savannah cats and below (f3/f4/f5) are considered domestic breed cats. F1 hybrids are not,” Powers says. As a result, Fenrir, being an F2, is allowed to compete for that record. In fact, that record’s history has always been held by a Savannah cat. “Guinness used to measure the heaviest cat, but people were force-feeding their cats to make them fat, and so they switched to tallest in order to get a biggest cat record,” explains Powers.

But regardless of breaking a record, Fenrir is a champ to Powers, who often took him out as a kitten, and made sure that he was well socialized with humans. Most cats live life on their own terms, offering a sleepy indifference to human demands; but, Fenrir is different. As a result of being handled frequently, Fenrir developed into a friendly kitty with a very loving personality. Powers and Fenrir have used the cat’s status as a world record holder to help raise funds for animals in need—specifically, shelter cats. “I was president of a cat shelter for years,” Dr. Powers explains, “and I still work with multiple cat shelters. Fenrir makes appearances at the events and people pay a couple dollars to take a picture with him.” The money raised through these photo ops are then donated to the shelters. “I couldn’t be prouder of Fenrir,” Dr. Powers admits on Instagram. “Not because he has a Guinness World Record or is the tallest living cat, but because he is an exceptionally loving animal.”

It is this loving nature that has led Fenrir to his second extraordinary achievement—his role as therapy cat in Dr. Powers’ medical practice. Fenrir and his other cats play a large part in the experience Powers offers to his patients as a family therapist and his work with HIV patients. “This guy follows me room to room, hops up on the exam table when I greet the patient, and gets to work on making them feel safe and comfortable,” Powers explains. Sometimes, patients even request to see Fenrir as part of their consultation, and he offers a calming presence and a soft and comforting distraction when Powers has to give a difficult diagnosis. “He is definitely the most popular therapy cat in my practice,” Powers admits. “People often ask me to go get him and bring him into the room if he doesn't choose to follow me in, as I move from patient room to patient room all morning.”

Powers puts a lot of time and effort into the six cats that currently live with him. They can frolic outdoors in a large enclosure, and he ensures each of his pets gets one-on-one time with him. He believes in early socialization and on-going enrichment activities. He has also developed a delectable menu. The high nutrition grub includes ground-up pig bones, raw chicken, slow-cooked meats, krill oil, and multivitamins and supplements. Through his time and attention and this unique diet, Powers has accidentally raised some exceptional cats.

Aside from Fenrir, Fenrir’s late brother Arcturus, who was 19.05 inches (48.38 centimeters), held the same Guinness World Record, and also has the record for the tallest cat ever. Powers’ late cat Cygnus holds the Guinness World Record for the longest tail on a domestic cat ever. Sadly, both these animals passed away in a fire that also nearly claimed Powers’ life. Powers now has Altair, the brother of Cygus, who also just received the world record for the longest tail on a living cat. All of Powers’ current felines, including Fenrir with his unique character and exuberant personality, have helped with the healing process after the devastating losses that Powers experienced from the fire.

“Fenrir is a big, silly cat,” Powers happily exclaims. “He gets the zoomies almost like a dog, and will run all around a room carrying a toy mouse or some other toy in his mouth. He absolutely loves ‘rough play.’ We have a game where he will chase me into the bedroom, then he will get into sort of a ‘downward pointing dog’ position. I then grab his front legs and literally fling him head over heels onto the bed. Sometimes he lands upright, sometimes he goes tumbling, but as soon as he rights himself, he runs right off the bed and right back to me to be thrown again.”

Outside of playtime, Fenrir is an exceptionally chilled and affectionate cat. He loves people, and will walk up to strangers to greet them and “bunt” them by rubbing his head against them. “Fenrir’s story is literally all over the world right now,” Powers says. But it’s not just the special achievements of Fenrir that are grabbing people’s attention. It’s the passion that Powers has for his precious felines, the unique service he offers to his HIV patients, and the amazing healing connections and relationships that are the result.

We all love our animal friends, and there's nothing better than spending some downtime with a loyal canine companion. In fact, science now suggests that interaction with a pet is comparable to one with human friends. According to the new study, petting and stroking our furry friends may even give us the same benefits as socializing, and the evidence of it lies in our neurology.

Previous research has proven that the prefrontal cortex of the brain is a key region that's active during different aspects of socializing, and in processing social interactions. The ability to understand what another person might be thinking and understanding the self in relation to others are both related to this frontal area of our brains. This means that the frontal lobe is also important for investigating the impact and effects of our interactions between humans and animals.

In this latest study, the participants first had interactions with real dogs—a 6-year-old female Jack Russell Terrier, a 4-year-old female Goldendoodle, and a 4-year-old Golden Retriever. They then interacted with a plush animal—a toy lion called Leo that had a hot water bottle tucked into the body to simulate the sensation of soft fur, animal body temperature, and the weight of a dog.

The researchers measured the oxygenated, deoxygenated, and total hemoglobin and oxygen saturation of the blood in the frontal lobe of the participants' brains, to assess their brain activity while they spent time in physical contact with the real animals. They then measured the same with the interactions with the inanimate Leo. The study proved a greater activation in this socially related part of the brain when the study participants interacted with the real dogs, in comparison with their interactions with the toy lion.

Interacting with an animal is an important social opportunity that becomes emotionally relevant and important, say the researchers. This kind of research also points to the value of close animals to vulnerable people in our society. There are many people whose opportunities for regular social contact are reduced; such as the elderly, those with cognitive differences, and people experiencing homelessness. “Integrating animals into therapeutic interventions might therefore be a promising approach for improving emotional involvement and attention,” the researchers explain. So, the evidence ultimately suggests that more time with your dog is as good as hanging out in the company of other humans—the activity in our brains show us this best.

A recent study has revealed that petting dogs may give us the same benefits as socializing with our human friends.

Dementia is a difficult road for those who have to face it. Loved ones who care for a person or parent with the condition face many tricky challenges along the way too, and often find themselves in for a bumpy emotional ride. One woman named Bailey recently shared a video on TikTok of a conversation with her dad Scott, who has dementia and no longer recognizes her as his daughter. In the heartwarming video, Scott expresses that he knows their relationship is somehow significant and important. “I have feelings for you,” Scott says to Bailey. “There are feelings—I know this girl, this lady—she is important to me in my life. So you mean something to me.”

The touching conversation between father and daughter has gone viral, and is reaching people across the world. Instead of interacting with her father from a place of fear and misunderstanding, Bailey offers him her spirit of kindness, compassion, and humor—and her posts reveal, happily, that Scott is protected from potential loneliness and emotional isolation thanks to their close relationship.

It became clear that Scott could no longer live independently in February 2022. Bailey and her sister Paige embraced the task of caring for him, and have shared the role ever since. Bailey is now putting snippets of her journey as Scott's daughter and carer on TikTok, inspiring others with the loving and inclusive way she manages their situation. Through Bailey's up-beat attitude, people are discovering an alternative approach to what can be a daunting and scary condition.

Losing memory, cognitive function, and even the use of language can be frightening, but even more upsetting is the emotional isolation and loneliness that people with various forms of dementia sometimes experience. “What bridges people with and without dementia to each other is the spirit,” says Michael Verde, founder of Memory Bridge, an organization that works to end emotional isolation and loneliness for people with dementia. “What people with dementia most need from us—is us.”

On Instagram, Bailey shares, “I hope to help as many people as I can thru TikTok and I want to change the stigma behind dementia and bring more awareness to my dad’s disease of Wernicke’s Encephalopathy, which is a degenerative brain disorder.” The loving daughter also says she wants to bring awareness to diabetes, which is a disease her mom has and, along with her traumatic brain injury, also needs full-time care-giving.

Bailey is certainly a positive role model for many. One Instagram follower even said the following: “Watching how you are with your parents has taught me something about kindness and grace when having a relationship with my parents despite their demons that strained our relationship through my formidable years. Thanks for changing the world.”

To some, death is a morbid affair. To others, it remains a mysterious concept, and offers a chance to serve others. Despite how we feel about it, a question that haunts many of us is, who will be there when it's our time to go? One compassionate woman has taken it upon herself to witness the exit of those who leave this world entirely alone. Jeane Trend-Hill from Islington in London has attended the funerals of hundreds of people she has never met, who had no friends or family to mourn them.

Trend-Hill, now 55, knew loss early on—her father passed away when she was just 14, and her mother when she was 20. Back in 2012, Trend-Hill entered what she thought was a pretty church, and walked straight into a funeral service. Her Catholic sensibilities had taught her that it was bad to leave, and so she stayed at the back, and was moved by the experience. Not long afterwards, a cemetery worker reached out to her and asked her to attend a funeral for a veteran who had no one to attend, and so she went along. That single act of kindness started something that kept expanding—from then on, at the cemetery she often visited, workers began asking her to be there for funerals of deceased people who had no relatives. Although she has lost the exact count, she has been the representative mourner at well over 200 funerals of complete strangers. “I realized that everyone has a story to tell, everyone has lived a life and should have someone around to remember them when they die,” Trend-Hill says.

Trend-Hill is an actress, an artist, and a photographer. Death with the rituals and symbols that surround it intrigues her, and she has spent hours sketching and photographing London's eerie and beautiful Victorian cemeteries. “I've always been fascinated with death, since I was a child,” Trend-Hill says. She has an eye for the mysterious and unearthly beauty that surrounds death, and has come to see cemeteries as outdoor art galleries. She acknowledges the importance of forgotten people, and for them to have someone to witness their exit at the end.

Trend-Hill spends time tidying and maintaining graveyards, and she has visited cemeteries across the world. Her unusual passion has led her to earn her PhD in mortuary science, to enable her to work as a cemetery historian. Her book, One Designer Clad Foot in the Grave, tells of her path from a happy childhood growing up in London, to how domestic abuse and a chronic illness turned her life upside down, and how she subsequently became an award-winning photographer, got involved with monument restoration and preservation, and was asked to act in films after being spotted by a film director in a cemetery.

Now that her penchant for cemeteries and funeral services is well-known, Trend-Hill gets invitations to attend send-offs on Facebook, and she will even wear a mourning dress if people ask her to.”Death has never worried me,” Trend-Hill admits. “I hope I can make death feel less scary for people. It’s my way of giving something back.”

We all want our dogs to live as long as possible; unfortunately, death is inevitable. Pebbles, the beloved Toy Fox Terrier and record holder for World's Oldest Dog, has died, just five months shy of her 23rd birthday. Pebbles passed away peacefully at her home in Taylors, South Carolina, on October 3, 2022. Her human companions, Bobby and Julie Gregory, were with her at the time.

“It has been said, she has given us more than we have ever given her, and no statement could be truer,” her family admits. “Pebbles was not just another dog; she had her own way about her, and her own personality. She was a once in a lifetime companion, and it was our honor to have had the blessing to have had her as a pet, and family member. There was never anyone who met Pebbles who didn’t love her. She will be deeply missed.”

Pebbles took the remarkable Guinness World Records title of the oldest living dog from a 21-year-old Chihuahua from Florida, Toby Keith, when she was 22 years and 50 days old. The Gregorys heard about the record held by Toby Keith, and were pretty sure that Pebbles was, in fact, older. They submitted their application for the record, including proof of Pebbles’ March 28, 2000 birth date, and the coveted title was then transferred to the lovable pooch.

Pebbles lived a wonderfully comfortable life with the Gregory family. She enjoyed warm baths and good food, and celebrated her amazing 22nd birthday with ribs and cake. As she aged, her family began to feed her cat food, because of the higher protein content, important for aging bodies. She also liked the weather warm and listening to country music. Pebbles gave birth to three litters in her lifetime—a total of 32 puppies. She had them with her partner, Rocky, also a Toy Fox Terrier, who died in 2017 at the age of 16.

When Gregorys were looking for a puppy to add to the family back in 2000, they were actually looking for a larger breed of dog. Pebbles as a tiny pup kept following Bobby while they were looking to adopt, and apparently it was instant love. The way that Pebbles lived from then on with good food and an abundance of positivity and love in the happy Gregory household was clearly the key to her healthy life and subsequent longevity.
