One Redditor is helping keep his grandson safe while giving the child an enchanting place to sleep. In a viral post, user libertyordeaaathh built a special bedroom setup for the child, who has autism. “Some kids with autism and other conditions need a safety bed to keep them safe and contained,” he shared alongside a video tour of the space. The result keeps his grandson's well-being in mind while making it an inviting environment with sweet murals depicting Winnie the Pooh and friends.

Libertyordeaaathh begins the tour by walking toward the back of the room. Doing so leads to a secondary door with a painted entrance; Eeyore the donkey and Tigger the tiger greet him there. The Redditor shows that he can open the door to the space and enjoy the blue-lit room contained within. Or, if need be, he can open the entire wall—it’s on a hinge—like a door to reveal the whole thing.

In the small room is a bed that perfectly fits the custom-built space and has murals on the wall depicting the interior of Pooh Bear’s home. There’s a pot of honey on a kitchen table and a painted window looking out to a grassy landscape. The grandpa then demonstrates that the bed is on wheels, and straps can be used to pull it from the enclosed space into the rest of the room.

To ensure that this bed would be safe in the event of an emergency, libertyordeaaathh consulted with the local fire department who familiarized themselves with the bed and gave feedback throughout the design process. The Redditor, having done a lot of research, also installed multiple fire detection systems, CO2 monitoring, and alarms as well as temperate monitoring and cameras. The bed meets governmental and bedding standards and all materials have been treated for flame resistance.

The response to the safety bed has been overwhelmingly positive. “Your grandson may not currently have the capacity to fully process your efforts, but I do hope he'll eventually show his gratitude to you for this beautiful thing you made for him,” one Redditor wrote. “Cuz lol, I'm just an Autistic young adult who's a stranger on the internet, & I feel so grateful for what you did. I can't imagine what your grandson must be feeling right now!”

Watch a Redditor give a tour of the space he made for his grandson who has autism. It features sweet murals and a safety bed:

Well-loved clothing shows its wear through holes that seemingly appear out of nowhere.  A small hole in a jacket or pair of pants is disappointing, and you might think it’s time to get rid of the garment. But, that’s not always the case. The Japanese art of kaketsugi, or invisible mending, can take a damaged piece of clothing and make it look brand new; you'd never realize that the hole was ever there.

Kaketsugi repairs the cloth by taking a piece of fabric from another part of the garment that's invisible, such as the seam allowance on the inside of a jacket. After snipping the fabric, it's placed over the hole and its threads are woven into the rest of the garment. Often, this will involve the craftsperson separating the fibers into thinner strands and then using a needle and piece of guiding thread to weave them through. The delicate process is a magical sight to behold and includes skills that can take many years to master.

When done well, the fix looks invisible and breathes new life into a beloved article of clothing. To see kaketsugi in action, watch the videos below.

A small hole in a shirt or jacket is disappointing, and you might think it's time to get rid of the garment. But not with kaketsugi, the Japanese art of invisible mending.

Learning the Basics of Knitting and Crochet

If you are new to knitting and crocheting, there are plenty of educational resources on the internet.

Crochet projects are done with a single crochet hook and can be quicker than knitting. Knitting, by contrast, uses two needles. While not hard to learn, knitting is generally the more complicated of the two crafts. You'll want to learn the basic knit stitch as well as casting on. This helpful video explains the knitting basics—even for absolute beginners. The purl stitch, which is another basic knitting technique, can also be learned through video tutorials.

Knitting needles and crochet hooks come in different sizes. This impacts the size of the stitches and how tight (or loose) the weave of your work will be. Bigger needles create a looser knit. Be careful to follow the pattern's requirements.

Although they use different tools, the same yarn considerations must be made for both knitting and crocheting. Yarn comes in strands of different widths. The thickness of the yarn may seem like a little detail, but it can greatly impact stitch count and the size of your final product. When reading a knitting or crocheting pattern, make sure to note the gauge of the yarn needed.

As Halloween draws near, spooky decor might be on your mind. Jack-o’-lanterns are one of the most common—and beloved—pieces of Halloween furnishings. But, let’s face it: pumpkin carving can be a challenge. From cleaning out the seeds to using sharp utensils, there are a few reasons to avoid the activity. But if you’re still wanting to decorate a gourd to beautify your porch, there’s a creative alternative: painted pumpkins.

For pumpkin painting, you’ll only need a few supplies to get started. Beyond the pumpkin, you’ll want to grab your favorite set of paintbrushes, acrylic paints, paint pens, and a paint palette. Then, think of the orange gourd as your blank canvas for all kinds of artwork. You could skew traditional and paint a face onto the pumpkin that’s akin to carving a Jack-o’-lantern. You could find inspiration in nature by painting leaves, flowers, or even the night sky. Or, you could go abstract. Elspeth McLean, for instance, painted in a pumpkin in the style of artist Yayoi Kusama and decorated the surface with many tiny dots. Whatever route you choose, have fun with it.

A Haunted Wreath

A hot glue gun and black spray paint are all you need to make a Halloween wreath like this example by Aimée Costello. You can collect real greenery or simply paint the more durable plastic options available at craft stores. See this tutorial from Lemon Thistle for guidance. If you already have an old wreath lying around, you can try a candy corn makeover with this tutorial from In Between Laundry.

Potion Bottle Candleholders

Recycle empty wine bottles to make candleholders worthy of the Addams family house. One simple way is to (carefully) drip hot wax from a candle in cool patterns and colors. Black matte spray paint also lends a dark vibe to your décor. If you are feeling adventurous, try this tutorial to craft mysterious potion bottles using creepy labels and spray paint.

Mad Scientist Centerpiece

Mad scientists preserve their specimens. You can make a creepy centerpiece with some mason jars and “specimens” of your own. Plastic spiders and rubber snakes would be excellent additions to your table. Find the easy instructions on Papermart.

Any witch or wizard needs a broom. Whether it's a Quidditch-lover's costume prop or a nostalgic nod to Hocus Pocus, these brooms can easily be made with a few simple materials. In fact, TheDailyDecorista shows how to craft these magical brooms in under five minutes. Tuck them around your house to remind guests they are in a witch's lair.

Enchanting Painted Pumpkins

A post shared by Sierra Miller (@sierralmiller) on

Painted pumpkins are some of the easiest Halloween DIY crafts. Clean and dry your pumpkins to prepare. Pick up some acrylic paint from your local craft store and let your creativity run wild. Permanent markers are also ideal for fine lines and designs. Pastel colors can be a bold move, departing from the classic spooky Jack-O'-Lantern. If you've got an artistic sweet tooth, you might want to try your hand at turning mini pumpkins into delectable donuts.

Halloween Mantel

A post shared by Rachel Iwanyszyn 🌙 (@jaglever)

Spruce up your fireplace by creating a spooky Halloween mantel. Whether you want to hang paper bats or paint some small pumpkins, there's a lot you can do to bring some Halloween spirit to your home. You can even put together this easy ribbon tassel garland in seasonal colors to create a unique Halloween scene.

Stacked Pumpkin Planter

While real pumpkins give you a lot of versatility in your crafting—particularly in their size—if you want a craft you can reuse year after year, try this stacked pumpkin planter. All you'll need are some basic supplies: plastic pumpkins, spray paint, a hot glue gun, and dried artificial flowers and foam to decorate the top pumpkin in the bunch.

Candy Corn…Everything

Candy Corn Crafts

Candy corn is a staple of Halloween. It's also an incredibly versatile craft material. Try stringing a sweet garland by simply poking a needle and fishing line through these sugary kernels. You can also nestle some pillar candles into a hurricane candle holder full of candy corn for a delicious decoration. And if you're looking for a less-perishable treat, try making this candy corn wall ornament made from dyed coffee filters.

Icky Eyeball Soap

What is spookier than eyeballs floating in jars? Nothing. Using ping-pong balls and permanent markers, design your own eyes—bloodshot or beady. Suspend them in any liquid for creepy decoration, but try them in hand soap to liven up your bathroom sink (and maybe surprise a guest).

Ghost Lights

These ghost lights are not only easy to whip up, but they also look great in an entryway or on your front porch. You'll need just a few supplies, including a white sheet, tomato cage, foam ball, and a string of white lights. This project is easy enough to include the entire family, just check out the tutorial.

Devilish Candles

Candlelight makes everything spookier. Try this tutorial for tortured pillar candles that can be made from candles you may already own. A less gruesome option, these tissue paper image transfer pillar candles make an elegant addition to any living room. They can be made easier with a printer and a hairdryer.

Fake Fire

Want to make your house the spookiest on the block? Create a witch's cauldron when you complete this DIY by Make Life Lovely. Using orange twinkle lights, spray foam, paint, and some plastic bones, you can create a scene that will add some fun scare to Halloween night: a pot surrounded by “embers” and scattered bones.

Creepy Giant Spider

This giant spider might look like the work of professionals, but you can replicate it for yourself by following a project by Little Yellow Wheelbarrow. You can find most of the supplies at “bargain and thrift shops” making this DIY accessible on any budget; and considering how scary it looks, you'll be getting a lot of bang for your buck! Some of the supplies you'll need are wire coat hangers, rubber balls, and a fur blanket.

Sometimes, it's hard to fight nature. Plants will grow wherever they want and as fast as they like—despite our best efforts otherwise. A Redditor with the username Rossionq1 realized this when it came to trimming his driveway. Surrounded by lush vegetation in coastal South Carolina, he became tired of pruning the vines around his driveway multiple times a week. So instead of continuing to cut them, he decided to lean into the plants’ propensity for rapid growth. He built a tunnel to help keep the flora tidy, and it doubles as a beautiful way to frame the road.

Rossionq1 created the tunnel on May 26, 2022, and in just a few months, the wireframe is well on its way to being completely covered in green. There’s a mix of plants lining it including wisteria, grape, dewberry, and bamboo. By the Redditor’s estimation, the entire thing will be cloaked in vegetation by the end of the year.

The enchanting tunnel is a DIY project by Rossionq1. As a software and systems engineer, he likes building stuff. To construct the tunnel, he used metal conduits as its “ribs” and lined them with chicken wire. “Each end is anchored to a concrete buried ground anchor,” he describes. “The plants will have some weight, but I’ve never seen it collapse a branch anywhere so I think the rigidity of the vines is close to canceling out the weight of the vines themselves. So far, it is shifted zero in any dimension (been watching closely).”

Aside from looking like something out of a storybook, the structure has been helpful in keeping the road unobstructed. “The areas not yet fully covered get some vines creeping in but nothing like before,” the Redditor explains. “Once the leaves basically shade out the driveway underneath, the vines stop trying to grow inwards.”
