When we think of places where a yoga session could take place, the first backdrop that comes to mind is a tranquil fitness studio, a gym, or maybe a relaxing natural landscape. But what about an art gallery? Hotel Gajoen Tokyo, located in the Meguro area of the Japanese capital, is holding yoga sessions at one of the property's banquet rooms, which has about 200 works of art—including paintings, wood carvings, lacquerwork, and intricate silk screens—on its walls and ceiling.

The property, which describes itself as “Museum Hotel of Japan Beauty,” opened its doors as a restaurant over 90 years ago under the name Meguro Gajoen. The luxurious environment and unique blend of Beijing and Tokyo cuisine it offered quickly earned it the nickname of “Palace of the Dragon God,” which led it to become a popular spot for weddings and other events.

“We wanted our customers to enjoy not only the taste of the food, but also their eyes. This is how the splendid Oriental art hall was born,” the hotel’s website states. Although it has now been turned into a boutique hotel, its mission to help its guests unwind in an elegant space remains intact, as demonstrated by the “morning yoga” sessions it offers in its beautiful and art-filled banquet room.

“Once you step inside, you will feel as if you have slipped back in time to a different space,” the hotel ensures. One can marvel at different works of art while strengthening your body—even in an upward facing dog position, you can admire the art on the ceiling. These yoga sessions are led by instructor Hikari Profile, and they take place every Wednesday and Friday at 7:30 a.m. While they are free for hotel guests, those who are not staying there can partake in classes for ¥7,000 ($53) per session, which includes a western-style breakfast.

For many people, one of the best parts of Christmas is the delicious, traditional home-cooked meals that signify the season. Sitting down with your loved ones and feasting together is a classic way to celebrate the holidays around the world. While some cultures center their big meal on Christmas Day, for others it's Christmas Eve. But no matter what the date, the sentiment is the same. In celebration of the holiday season, we've gathered recipes from 25 different countries that are commonly eaten.

These dishes are steeped in tradition and the love and warmth of the holidays, no matter what the ingredients. People from around the world took to BuzzFeed to share what's on the menu at their holiday table, making for a mouthwatering holiday voyage around the globe. Meat is a big trend in many countries, including Denmark where flæskesteg (a pork roast with crackled skin) is served as the main component of the Christmas Eve meal. According to mettekirkk, it's served with “potatoes, warm red cabbage, gravy, small caramelized potatoes, and chips.”

By contrast, it's interesting to see how countries with warmer climates, like New Zealand, differ from the hearty Nordic tables of Finland and Sweden. And of course, no Christmas dinner is complete without something sweet, which can range from chocolate, cookies, cake, and beyond.

Let's take a look at some of the plates that make the holidays special in homes around the world.

Check out some of the most interesting Christmas dinner traditions around the world, from a Swedish smörgåsbord to a New Zealand barbecue.

Switzerland

Fondue paysanne

In Switzerland, families gather around the table to enjoy a Fondue Chinoise, where thin slices of meat are dipped with skewers into boiling broth. This particular meal is popular both for Christmas and New Year's Eve dinners.

Netherlands

GourmettenGourmetten is the typical holiday meal in the Netherlands, with most families having a “gourmet set” for the occasion. In this tradition, small meats and vegetables are cooked on a tabletop hotplate by the whole family.

Mexico

Romeritos

Mexican Christmas meals can vary greatly from region to region. In central Mexico, romeritos are a common feature on the table. Made with sprigs of seepweed, shrimp seasoning, and mole—a traditional sauce made with a variety of chili peppers, nuts, and spices—they are often served with dried shrimp patties or between slices of bread.

Guatemala

Guatemala City, Guatemala

Tamales are a large part of the traditional Guatemalan Christmas. They can be red (colorado) or black (negro), and are eaten from Christmas Eve through New Year's Eve.

Sweden

Christmas dinner

A Swedish holiday feast means julbord, a smörgåsbord consisting of hot and cold dishes like ham, spare ribs, a variety of fish, potatoes, meatballs, and boiled cabbage. In the south, it's typical to also have eel on the menu.

Slovakia

Kapustnica

A Slovakian Christmas starts with a big meal on December 24 and continues through Christmas Day. One typical dish is sauerkraut soup with mushrooms eaten on Christmas Eve, with pork being added in on December 25 as meat is placed on the menu.

Botswana

Fried Chicken with Jolof Rice and Salad

According to mommagen, the Christmas meal in Botswana is similar to that served at any important occasion—such as a wedding—and consists of rice, salad, and fried chicken.

Japan

Millions of people in Japan celebrate Christmas with KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken). The fried chicken chain restaurant has almost become synonymous with the holiday. Since the fast-food restaurant first opened in Japan in the 1970s, it has marketed itself around Christmas, creating a unique tradition of eating a bucket of fried chicken with loved ones.

Venezuela

Mas naa

In Venezuela, hallacas are the go-to dish during the Christmas season. Similar to a tamale, it's a corn-stuffed dough filled with meat or seafood, depending on the region. Also on the table is pan de jamón, a bread roll filled with ham, fried bacon, raisins, and green olives.

New Zealand

down under dessert

It's only fitting that New Zealanders fire up the barbecue during the holidays, grilling a wide array of goodies like beef and veggies, and then ending their holiday meal with the meringue-based cake, called Pavlova.

Norway

A Typical Norwegian Christmas Dinner

Norway's Christmas traditions stretch back to the Vikings, and their holiday meal still shows traces of these origins. “For example, we have a strange thing where we place cod in lye so it becomes jelly-like and then we rinse it, like, 20 times before serving it with melted butter and bacon,” shares gabsfever. “We also eat dried cooked lamb head, and dried lamb rib that's been boiled with sticks for eight or more hours.”

Finland

LanttulaatikkoLanttulaatikko, or rutabaga casserole, is a staple of the Finnish Christmas table. It's made by boiling and mashing rutabaga and mixing in bread crumbs, treacle, egg, and a variety of seasonal spices like nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger. Once baked in the oven, it becomes a favorite side dish to accompany ham or fish.

United Kingdom

Christmas dinner

The traditional Christmas roast in the UK—either turkey, goose, or chicken—is accompanied by myriad sides. From Brussel sprouts to bacon-wrapped sausage and roast carrots, everything is topped with savory gravy.

Poland

uszka-in-barszcz

As part of the traditional Christmas Eve meal in Poland, a clear borscht (beetroot stew) is prepared with mushroom-filled dumplings called uszka. It's one of just 12 plates that comprise the December 24 menu, none of which contain meat.

Greece

Christopsomos

On Christmas Eve, it's customary for Greek families to prepare a rustic sweetbread called Christopsomo (meaning “Christ's bread”). The dough is filled with raisins, apricots, nuts, cardamom, and cloves, and the top is often decorated with a cross and honey glaze. It becomes a delicious centerpiece on Christmas Day.

Philippines

Jamón americano

In the Philippines, feasting comes at the stroke of midnight according to willievergettoseeyou, “in the Philippines, Noche Buena, the mother of Christmas meals, usually starts at 12 am Christmas Day. Yes, we stay up all Christmas Eve so we can feast come midnight.” The star of the table is the Fiesta ham served with rice and Pinoy-style spaghetti.

Iceland

Hangikjot

On Christmas Day, Icelanders enjoy a dish called Hangikjot, which includes thin-sliced meat made from lamb, mutton, or horse that is smoked over dried sheep's dung and accompanied by a cream sauce.

Armenia

Armenian Christmas Ghapama

The Eastern Orthodox community in Armenia celebrates Christmas on January 7 with ghapama—a special roasted pumpkin dish that is stuffed with rice, raisins, and nuts.

Puerto Rico

NDQ_3530

Puerto Ricans celebrate the Christmas holiday with their regional specialty, lechón, which is a roast suckling pig. Popular in many Spanish-speaking countries, this food requires a significant amount of preparation and is usually enjoyed by a large group of people.

Greenland

Mattak

Christmas dinner in Greenland features meat delicacies that are highly unique to the area. One traditional dish that can usually be seen at the table is strips of whale blubber encased in whale skin called mattak.

Costa Rica

Homemade Corn and Chicken Tamales

Tamales are an important part of Costa Rican cuisine, but especially at Christmas. This dish used to be made only for the holiday and remains a key component of the meal. It is usually made with corn, pork, carrots, sweet pepper, and achiote; and wrapped in a plantain leaf before it is cooked.

Australia

Grilled prawns with asparagus, rosemary and salad leaves

Like other countries in the southern hemisphere, Australia experiences Christmas during the summer. So, instead of eating indoors, many Australians prefer to take advantage of the warm weather and cook outside. They prepare a variety of meats, but grilled prawns is usually a favorite.

Montenegro

Kutia

In Montenegro, many people will fast through Christmas Eve and enjoy a meatless, and dairy-free Christmas dinner. One of the traditional dishes that can be seen at the table is kutia, which is made of wheatberries, poppy seeds, and honey. This ceremonial dish symbolizes unity.

Denmark

Merry Christmas

A traditional Danish Christmas dinner isn't complete without a special dessert called Risalamande (or ris à l'amande in French). It is a cold rice pudding typically served with hot or cold cherry sauce. Risalamande has been a popular staple in Denmark since the late 19th century.

The Orient Express Unveils Luxurious Presidential Suite Paying Homage to Art Deco Design

Orient Express - Presidential Suite

In late October 2022, hospitality giant Accor revealed the first glimpse of its revamped Orient Express train. With interiors designed by respected French architect Maxime d’Angeac, the Nostalgie-Istanbul-Orient-Express train cars paid homage to their past while boldly marching into the future. Now, the sumptuous Presidential Suite—which occupies an entire train car—has been revealed. And the results are as incredible as you might imagine.

With a roomy interior inspired by the masters of Art Deco design, the Presidential Suite is 69 feet long and 9 feet wide. As travelers step inside the private entrance, they will be greeted by a Maître d'hôtel, whose job is only to serve Orient Express voyagers. He'll guide guests through the one-bedroom suite, which includes Lalique paneling, custom furniture, and a gas fireplace.

“The Orient Express Presidential Suite captures the essence of the future train,” explains d'Angeac, who is known for his work with fashion houses Hermès and Guerlain. “It is a work carved out of excess, inspired by the geniuses and pioneers of Art Deco, Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann, and Armand-Albert Rateau, and by the importance of refinement and the absolute finesse of detail. It is a Suite where travelers can experience history, extreme luxury, and ultimate comfort all at once.”

Along with the expected living room, bedroom, and bathroom, the suite is full of surprises. This includes a unique collector's item: an “LX” luxury cabin dating from 1929, with two beds, adorned with solid mahogany and Nelson and Prou marquetry, found aboard the Nostalgie-Istanbul-Orient-Express and fully restored. The ultimate surprise is the Cabinet de l'Égoïste, a secret room dedicated to good vibes and epicurean festivities.

The full magic of the Orient Express Presidential Suite is currently on display at Design Miami/. Through December 4, 2022, guests at the international fair can experience the opulence of the suite for themselves thanks to an immersive virtual reality experience.

With roots in medieval Germany, this annual advent tradition is now popular in cities, towns, and villages around the world. To get you in the holiday spirit, we've picked out a selection of the best Christmas markets in the world, each of which makes a charming destination for the whole family.

Every year, Wiener Rathausplatz, Vienna's town hall square, is transformed into Wiener Weihnachtstraum, or the “Viennese Christmas Dream.” In this traditional Austrian festival, visitors will find all the trimmings that have come to define Christmas markets, like handmade goodies and hot mulled wine, as well as an ice skating rink and even Christmas carolers.

What makes this market truly special, however, is its “dreamlike backdrop of the City Hall,” a luminous 19th-century Neo-Gothic landmark.

Since 1441, Tallinn, Estonia, has adorned its Town Hall Square with a decorated tree. This makes it the first place in Europe to set up a Christmas tree—and the perfect place to have a Christmas market!

While the Christmas tree is the star of the show, this market has much more magic in store. In addition to local merchants who “offer Estonian Christmas cuisine, from black pudding and sour cabbage to gingerbread and hot Christmas drinks,” it also features another special guest: Jõuluvana, or Santa Claus!

Finally, if you're American and believe that there's no place like home for the holidays, you'll be happy to know that this medieval tradition has made its way to the United States. Most of these fairs stay true to their Germanic roots, with Chicago's Christkindl Market even retaining the name.

Nestled in the Chicago Loop, this charming market puts a modern twist on the tradition. While its handcrafted nutcrackers, cuckoo clocks, and beer steins will transport you to age-old Europe, its beautiful business district setting will remind you that you're in one of America's most sensational cities.

Studio Ghibli’s Highly Anticipated Theme Park Is Finally Open Studio Ghibli Park

After years of construction and some slight delays, Studio Ghibli's very own theme park is finally open to the public. Located about an hour away from Kyoto, in Nagakute City, the sprawling destination is built on the former site of the 2005 World EXPO. There, spread across 494 spacious acres, are recreations of some of the beloved buildings and gardens depicted in Studio Ghibli's animated films, such as Howl's Moving Castle and My Neighbor Totoro.

Unlike Disneyland, Ghibli Park does not feature roller coasters or rides. Instead, it welcomes visitors to immerse themselves in life-size sets that are harmoniously integrated with nature. “People think of it as a theme park, but I’ve always wanted it to be a park,” director Goro Miyazaki, son of Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki, says. “I think that parks are first and foremost for the local people, so I wanted them to be loved by the people of Aichi more than anyone else.”

The entire park is divided into five areas, each of which centers around a specific theme and film. Right now, only three are completed and open to the public. The area closest to the park's entrance is Seishun no oka (translated as “the hill of youth”), which is based on the architecture of Howl's Moving Castle—set in a 19th-century fantasy world—and the farmhouse in the 1995 film Whisper of the Heart. For those that are interested in a behind-the-scenes look at Ghibli films, there is Area 2: Ghibli daisoko (“Ghibli Warehouse”). Here, visitors will be able to see memorabilia from some of the animation, unique exhibitions, and select film screenings. Dondoko mori (“Dondoko Forest”) is the third area that is open, and it's based on one of Studio Ghibli's most famous movies, My Neighbor Totoro. This section of the park includes a replica of the farmhouse in the film as well as an abundance of trees and trails.

While there is plenty to do already, in three-years’ time, Ghibli Park will open its last two sections—Mononoke no sato (“Mononoke Village”) and Majo no tani (“Valley of the Witch”)—which are dedicated to the films Princess Mononoke and Kiki's Delivery Service, respectively. There may even be a future ride in store, as some of the concept art appears to depict spinning teacups inspired by Kiki's cat Jiji.

You can purchase timed tickets starting at 1,000 yen ($6.75) for adults and 500 yen ($3.37) for children.

Photographer Helps Build Waterhole to Capture Incredible Photos of African Wildlife Leopard at the Shomphole Hide

Wildlife photographer Will Burrard-Lucas is known for his ingenious use of camera traps to photograph animals in Africa. Over the past two years, he's spent a significant amount of time at Kenya's Shompole Wilderness Camp. During that time, he has gotten to know the grounds quite well, including how the land really comes alive at night. Thanks to this knowledge, he was able to help the camp, which is owned by the local Maasai community, expand its offerings.

The daytime heat creates a dry, dusty environment that can make it difficult to find wildlife to photograph. But, in an article on his blog, Burrard-Lucas explains how he first came to realize the rich variety of wildlife that roams Shompole's terrain after dark. During an evening drive with SORALO, a community organization that provides locals with information about dangerous wildlife in order to drive down human/wildlife conflict, the accomplished photographer spotted many rare species.

These animals were attracted to a small watering hole that supported an incredible variety of life. Burrard-Lucas set up one of his camera traps at the watering hole and was astonished to see the zebras, leopards, porcupines, and wildebeest that spent the evening hours hydrating there.

That's when an idea was born. The Maasai who own the Shompole Wilderness Camp benefit from tourism revenue while they take care of the environment and use the land sustainably. What if they could offer a new experience to their visitors while also giving animals another source of water?

The Shompole Hide is a manmade watering hole far from other sources of water. Along with the watering hole, the team—under the guidance of Burrard-Lucas—built a hide where people could observe and photograph the animals as they came to drink. Not long after the watering hole took shape, Burrard-Lucas set up a camera trap to see what the animals thought of their new source of water.

To everyone's delight, just a few days later it was clear that Shompole Hide was a success. After some experimentation in the hide, Burrard-Lucas was then able to photograph a steady stream of wildlife enjoying the new water source. Lions, hyenas, leopards, baboons, and many different species of birds were just some of the animals he observed.

Thanks to a three-mile pipeline with a solar pump, the watering hole will stay full for all the animals to enjoy. The hide, which is made from two shipping containers, has large observation windows with a 270-degree view, as well as a toilet and fold-down beds. A flexible lighting system is currently being installed and when it is ready, photographers will be able to light the watering hole from any angle.

Burrard-Lucas is thrilled with the result and is excited to see how photographers make use of the facility. “Every session in the hide generates a contribution to the local community,” he writes. “Shompole Hide’s journey is just beginning, and I can’t wait to see what comes next.”
