Meet Fray Tormenta, the Mexican Priest Who Inspired the Movie ‘Nacho Libre’

When called to help the vulnerable, the bravest will put themselves in danger if needed. The story of a devoted priest who became a wrestler to support the orphans under his care made its way to the silver screen in 2006 with the movie Nacho Libre starring Jack Black.

It turns out, however, that the film was inspired by the very real tale of a Mexican priest called Sergio Gutiérrez Benítez, who is better known by the ring name he took: Fray Tormenta (“Friar Storm”). He moonlit in the wrestling scene to make some money and help children in need.

Scroll down to learn more about Sergio Gutiérrez Benítez, aka Fray Tormenta.

Who is Fray Tormenta, the inspiration behind Nacho Libre?

Sergio Gutiérrez Benítez was born in San Agustín Metzquititlán, a town in Central Mexico, in 1945. He had a complicated youth and began struggling with addiction when he was just 11 years old. “By the time I turned 18 I had already become a criminal and a thief. I was working to sustain my dosage. I did everything, I [even worked as] an actor and clown in a circus, but I spent everything on my doses and I needed more, so I started stealing,” he recalled.

One day, in search of redemption, Benítez went into a church and entered the confessional booth. The priest offered little help and instead shooed him off. Disappointed, he decided to enter rehab, join a seminary, and become the kind priest he couldn't find at his most desperate hour. His dedication even took him to further his studies in Rome and Spain and was eventually inducted into the Piarists Order.

Back in Mexico, Benítez dedicated his work to people struggling with addiction. But after one person died in his arms, he swore to always help the destitute, and it led him to create an orphanage. He later became a secular priest in the Diocese of Texcoco, just outside of Mexico City.

A Wrestling Career to Support an Orphanage

Benítez set up his shelter in 1976 but realized it was going to be a pricey endeavor. He remembered a movie he had seen years earlier, titled El señor Tormenta (“Mister Storm”), in which a priest becomes a wrestler to support his orphanage. From there, he set his sights on winning “a million dollars, like Muhammad Ali.”

To achieve his goal, he trained every day at a gym for four hours in the early morning, finishing just in time for the 7 AM Mass. He sometimes showed up to the confessional booth with bruises and in pain. After a year of preparation, he made his debut, earning about $15 from his first combat.

Inspired by the movie, he picked the ring name “Fray Tormenta.” Gutiérrez said in an interview, “I thought: the character is going to be brought to life by the fact that people believe that he [actually] is a priest.” Safeguarding his identity by wearing a red and gold mask, he traveled from town to town.

Although it's common in Mexican wrestling for a fighter to have their identity revealed after “waging” their mask and losing in combat, Fray Tormenta's true name was revealed by accident. “Another famous wrestler, Huracán Ramírez, was to blame. One day he called me on the phone and told me: ‘Tormenta, we will fight on Saturday', and then I slipped out: ‘I can't, I have to officiate a wedding.' [He replied] ‘Are you really a priest?' I asked him to keep the secret but that Saturday he came to the wedding, and in a few days everyone knew.”

In the end, it turned out to be a good thing, as he was promoted and got to travel the world for exhibition matches.

Legacy of Fray Tormenta

Although he only planned to be a wrestler for a couple of years, he spent 23 years in the ring and retired in the year 2000. “From wrestling, I like that people turn you into an idol and you can use the fame to help them. I can't conceive wrestling just for money if it's not for a cause.”

After surviving a bad case of COVID-19 in 2020, Gutiérrez sold some of his masks to raise money for the orphanage. Despite being in his late 70s, he still officiates catholic masses. He occasionally does appearances at matches and is known for wearing his mask to church.

Gutiérrez is very proud of his orphanage, which he named “La Casa Hogar de los Cachorros de Fray Tormenta” or “Fray Tormenta's Puppies' Children's Home.” He has helped over 2,000 kids, some of who have become lawyers, doctors, accountants, and, of course, priests and wrestlers.

For some people who are born without arms or have lost them during an accident or to disease, their legs and feet become priceless tools for performing daily chores—or even making art. It may mean there are some different challenges involved for individuals without arms but it turns out home improvement projects can be done with amazing results. Redditor Thund3rbolt posted a video of an unnamed armless man installing tiles on a floor using only his feet at every step of the process. Not only did he accomplish the laborious task, but it also looks professional and polished.

The inspiring video earned over 67,000 upvotes on Reddit, and people praised the man's abilities—especially since a lot of able-bodied people would not be able to install tiles with that level efficiency and flawlessness. “His attention to detail is much better than what I've seen. Good on him,” said one user, while other wrote, “This man is more dexterous with his feet than I am with my hands.” A lot of people noticed an endearing moment at the end of the video, when the man seems to give a “toes up” to celebrate a job well done.

While it's not clear if the man does this for a living or it's a personal project he decided to complete, viewers have commented that they would hire him for a floor renovation if he's available. Overall, the video proves that with perseverance, effort, and patience, the sky’s the limit.

A video posted to Reddit of an unnamed armless man installing tiles on a floor using only his feet has made waves, as the result looks flawless and professional.

For children, gifts are usually one of the most exciting parts of Christmas. While opening presents and playing with new toys is thrilling, some kids find happiness in giving rather than receiving. For 12-year-old Jonathan Werner, this is certainly the case. After learning that his father grew up in the foster system and didn't have much of a Christmas, the Boy Scout from Minnesota decided to get gifts and basic supplies for children in foster families and domestic violence shelters in four counties and part of a fifth.

To do so, Werner sold bags of flavored popcorn and chocolate-coated pretzels, setting a table by the entrance of big stores during the fall. “Having him do a project like this and knowing that where I was those years, I could have had somebody like [Jonathan], it would have been really special,” his dad, Steven Kolk, told Good Morning America. “I'm proud of what he chose to do and the number of people that he can reach with this project.”

After selling over $56,000 in popcorn, he headed to multiple stores to pick gifts for 138 children. He chose his presents based on letters from the children and lists that social workers shared with him. “He reads what every kid writes and tries to find something he thinks they are specifically going to like,” Jonathan’s mother, Serena Kolk, told 11Alive.

This year, he bought over 600 hundred presents, from clothes to Barbie dolls and LEGO sets. He estimated the total to be around $11,300. Once the shopping was done, he set up a gift-wrapping workshop at home, getting fellow Boy Scouts, his family, and other community members to help him have everything ready by Christmas. “I just want to make kids happy for Christmas and let them know they are loved and appreciated,” said Jonathan, whose goal is to get Christmas gifts for every foster child in Minnesota.

His project has even sparked more good deeds among his neighbors. “I've also seen it inspire our other children and friends of ours and other people in the community at the stores and things like that and so it's really special,” Kolk shares. “It really brings a tear to your eye and makes you feel like he's really making a difference for people.”

Woman Saves Man’s Life After Rescuing Him From a Snowbank During Deadly Storm

There are everyday heroes among us, and Sha’Kyra Aughtry is one of them. In the midst of the deadly snowstorm that hit Buffalo, New York, she saved the life of a 64-year-old man named Joey White who was scared and crying for help just outside her front door.

White is developmentally disabled, and when the storm hit he became stranded in a snow bank. With the frigid temperatures, he was in bad shape. Aughtry heard his pleas, and she and her boyfriend Trent found White and carried him out of the cold and into their home on Christmas Eve.

With White inside, Aughtry began to care for the man. He had been in the storm so long that his clothing was frozen to his body and his hands were frostbitten; she had to cut off his socks and remove his pants with the heat from a hairdryer. She covered him in blankets, but she knew he needed serious help—the frostbite was turning his hands gangrene.

Many emergency medical services were down, so Aughtry posted an urgent message on Facebook needing help. It took two days, but more kind strangers eventually came to the rescue. They plowed a path out of the couple’s home and helped get White to a hospital, where he had fourth-degree frostbite.

Before he could get to the hospital, Aughtry contacted White’s sister, Yvonne, and told her that she had his brother and was taking care of him. To keep White comfortable and take his mind off the pain before they could get care, Aughtry had him FaceTime with his sister.

White remains in the hospital as doctors monitor his frostbite, but he will survive. In the meantime, his sister cannot thank Aughtry and her family enough. “I’m sure he would’ve perished,” she said in a video. “I told Joey, we gained a family… [Aughtry] went above and beyond, for a stranger, what she did is just heartwarming and it makes me cry.”

Sha’Kyra Aughtry and her family rescued a man named Joe White, a 64-year-old man with developmental disabilities, from a snowbank in Buffalo, New York.

Aughtry removed his frozen clothes and wrapped his frostbitten hands until they could get him to a hospital.

Buffalo Couple Takes in 10 South Korean Tourists Stranded During Massive Snowstorm

Buffalo, New York, is amidst a “once in a generation” snowstorm. The severe weather has delivered a massive amount of precipitation and extreme temperatures that have people stranded—including a group of South Korean tourists. Luckily, this pack of 10 people was fortunate to have their van stuck outside the house of Alexander Campagna and his wife, Andrea.

The couple had been planning on spending a quiet holiday weekend at home and had stocked plenty of food in their pantry. So, when they learned of the marooned group, they invited the tourists in and became “accidental innkeepers” while they spent an enjoyable weekend with their guests.

The group of tourists was traveling up the East coast and was en route to Niagra Falls. They had seen the sights in Washington, D.C., and were largely unaware of the impending storm. But the Friday before Christmas, the van was stuck after trying to maneuver the deteriorating road conditions. Two of the passengers knocked on the Campagnas' door and the couple immediately brought them in, “knowing, as a Buffalonian, this is on another level, the Darth Vader of storms,” Alexander said.

The visitors slept on air mattresses, on couches, in sleeping bags, and in a guest bedroom. Of the visitors, three of them spoke English proficiently. Together, they watched football and shared stories. The guests, surprised and delighted by the Campagnas' Korean food provisions, created a variety of tasty meals they would make at home.

The travelers appreciated the impromptu hospitality, and it was something neither party will soon forget. “It was kind of like fate,” remarked Yoseb Choi, one of the travelers who was on his honeymoon. Alexander echoed the sentiment, which he refers to as a blessing. “We have enjoyed this so much.” He and Andrea are now planning a visit to South Korea.

Democracy is under a global threat. From the violent January 6 insurrection in the U.S. to democratic backsliding in Europe, participatory governments are at a critical historical point. As developed by the ancient Greeks, democracy requires participation from an informed citizenry to function properly. The Internet Archive has created a resource to help facilitate this political engagement. Democracy's Library is a repository of free, online, trustworthy sources published by democratic governments.

The Internet Archive has been preserving billions of web pages since 1996 through its Wayback Machine. As a member of the American Library Association, it has also expanded to host millions of free books, audio recordings, and videos. The site functions as an accessible, free repository of thousands of years of knowledge and culture. Its latest offering—Democracy's Library—is a collection of 500,000 documents and reports. They come from U.S. agencies such as the Bureau of Land Management and the Foreign Broadcast Information Service. Public Accounts of Canadian provinces are also available, as well as vast reservoirs of data. You can browse historic U.S. Congressional Hearings or Global Public Safety Codes.

The library has been created for a simple reason: “Because democracies need an educated citizenry to thrive.” In the age of internet disinformation, unreliable sources are a direct threat to this solid basis of government. “Governments have created an abundance of information and put it in the public domain, but it turns out the public can’t easily access it,” says Brewster Kahle, founder of the Internet Archive. Knowledge is power—and knowing what your government is doing and saying offers opportunities for democratic participation at the ballot.

For resources on identifying and avoiding fake news and misinformation, check out this handy infographic or this guide.

The Internet Archive has created Democracy's Library, a free, online database of over 500,000 documents by democratic governments and for democratic citizens.

Retail workers are heroes. They put up with long hours and angry customers, among a lot of other things. This work is hard on younger, able-bodied people, but it can really take a toll on a senior citizen. That's why it was so heartbreaking for TikToker Devan Bonagura (@dbon973_) to see 81-year-old Nola Carpenter sitting in the break room of the Walmart where she works. In the short video he shared, the woman appears tired and stares at the floor as if bracing for another portion of her shift. The video eventually went viral, earning over 30 million views and igniting a movement that would change Carpenter's life.

Although Bonagura didn't work at the Walmart himself, he happened to be there as he worked for a third-party company that sells phones at the store. He posted a short video of her with the message “Life shouldn't b[e] this hard…” and the caption “I feel bad.” Eventually, his followers urged him to find a way to support this woman, and it inspired him to open a GoFundMe campaign titled “Let’s help Nola retire.” The idea was to support Carpenter so she could finally hang up her blue vest.

The response was swift, and although the initial goal was just $10,000, 24 hours later over $100,000 had been donated. Two days later, he finally met up with Nola and told her how he had posted a video of her and how people had come together to help her. “They saw that you’re a very hard worker, obviously,” the TikToker told the woman. “We are all super proud of you, and we wanted to offer you the $110,000 that has been raised for you.”

A perplexed Carpenter replies that wouldn't be the end of it. “I’d accept it, but I’d still have to work until I get the other $60,000 paid off the house,” she explains. “That’s what’s holding me at work—the house,” adding that it wouldn't take as long with the donated sum. Eventually, it was announced in a later video that the additional money was raised for Carpenter to finally be at peace.

However, the hardworking woman disclosed that, despite reaching her goal, she won't retire until the New Year. “I'm going to help them out for the holidays, and after that, it'll be good to stay at home,” said Carpenter. She has worked at Walmart for over 20 years and deserves to spend her golden years lounging at home instead of at retail shifts. “I'm going to miss my customers. They look for me every day,” she said.

After TikToker Devan Bonagura spotted 81-year-old Nola Carpenter sitting in the break room of the Walmart where she works, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to help the woman retire.

Representation is a powerful force for good. When a child can hold a doll that looks like them, it helps them to feel seen and accepted. But not every child can have a doll that reflects their characteristics, particularly if they have visible physical differences. Amy Jandrisevits is a former social worker who has made it her mission to craft unique dolls that are look-alikes for special children. Her non-profit organization called A Doll Like Me gives kids the opportunity to see themselves in the toys they play with. The impacts of her creative talents are life-changing for the recipient. If you need any proof, just look at the joy on each of their faces!

Each custom-made doll is free of charge for the family, which is made possible through donations made to the organization. Jandrisevits puts her heart and soul into each doll and pays careful attention to the distinctive physical characteristics of the child it's modeled after. She understands the effect and importance the toy will have for her future recipient, and she works tirelessly to make each doll perfect for them. This means she can spend up to seven hours on one figure.

“Every single doll tells a story and some are raw and heartbreaking and emotional,” she told My Modern Met in 2020. “I am privileged to be a part of their stories and honored to get a glimpse into their world. I don't take that lightly.”

The response to the dolls has only confirmed Jandrisevits' convictions and passion for creating. “We need to see each child as a work of art—a masterpiece. While doll-making is an art form, the real canvas is the child him/herself,” she said. “If we want to become a society that values differences and inclusivity, this is where we start. We start with something as simple as a doll—a human likeness.”

And police officer that was the first on the scene didn’t have a defibrillator with him. The ambulance did finally arrive, over 19 minutes later, but Jamie’s brain had been too starved of oxygen. He passed away a few days later in the hospital.

Naomi Issitt, Jamie’s mom, explains just how life saving defibrillators are. “If you reach a person in cardiac arrest in seven minutes the chances of getting his heart beating again is 70%.” She points out that many defibrillators are locked in buildings and adds, “You can’t pre-plan your cardiac arrest. Defibrillators that are locked in buildings are pretty pointless.”

On January 26, Issitt started a Just Giving fundraiser to install a 24/7 automated defibrillator at a local school in her son’s memory. There was a tremendous amount of support within the community. Only one day later, the family met double their goal. With around £3,000 (about $3,655) in hand, they decided to keep going.

Issitt soon founded a charity called OurJay Foundation, named after her Jay. Through fundraising efforts that included a bingo night, a raffle, horse races, selling wax melts, and more, the charity has raised over £50,000 (approximately $60,924) and has installed 22 defibrillators all over town, with 13 more on the way. “We can’t thank people enough,” says Issitt. “The support has been amazing.”

Jamie’s legacy doesn’t stop there, though. He had previously told his family he wanted to be an organ donor. To ensure they knew, he even signed up three times. And, as Issitt shares on Facebook, “On the 5th January as a result of Jamie’s truly selfless act of generosity, 5 people received an organ transplant from him.”

“We know Jamie is out there,” says Issitt. “He’s meant to be saving lives.”

On New Year’s Day 2022, 18-year-old Jamie Rees suddenly suffered a cardiac arrest. He was not able to get a defibrillator in time, and he sadly passed away a few days later in the hospital.

The closest defibrillator to Jamie was locked away in a school. Issitt says, “You can’t pre-plan your cardiac arrest. Defibrillators that are locked in buildings are pretty pointless.”

One Redditor is helping keep his grandson safe while giving the child an enchanting place to sleep. In a viral post, user libertyordeaaathh built a special bedroom setup for the child, who has autism. “Some kids with autism and other conditions need a safety bed to keep them safe and contained,” he shared alongside a video tour of the space. The result keeps his grandson's well-being in mind while making it an inviting environment with sweet murals depicting Winnie the Pooh and friends.

Libertyordeaaathh begins the tour by walking toward the back of the room. Doing so leads to a secondary door with a painted entrance; Eeyore the donkey and Tigger the tiger greet him there. The Redditor shows that he can open the door to the space and enjoy the blue-lit room contained within. Or, if need be, he can open the entire wall—it’s on a hinge—like a door to reveal the whole thing.

In the small room is a bed that perfectly fits the custom-built space and has murals on the wall depicting the interior of Pooh Bear’s home. There’s a pot of honey on a kitchen table and a painted window looking out to a grassy landscape. The grandpa then demonstrates that the bed is on wheels, and straps can be used to pull it from the enclosed space into the rest of the room.

To ensure that this bed would be safe in the event of an emergency, libertyordeaaathh consulted with the local fire department who familiarized themselves with the bed and gave feedback throughout the design process. The Redditor, having done a lot of research, also installed multiple fire detection systems, CO2 monitoring, and alarms as well as temperate monitoring and cameras. The bed meets governmental and bedding standards and all materials have been treated for flame resistance.

The response to the safety bed has been overwhelmingly positive. “Your grandson may not currently have the capacity to fully process your efforts, but I do hope he'll eventually show his gratitude to you for this beautiful thing you made for him,” one Redditor wrote. “Cuz lol, I'm just an Autistic young adult who's a stranger on the internet, & I feel so grateful for what you did. I can't imagine what your grandson must be feeling right now!”
