42,000 Bamboo Shoots Form Impressive Welcome Center at Vietnamese Resort Vo Trong Nghia Architects - Grand World Phu Quoc Welcome Center

Using 42,000 bamboo shoots, Vo Trong Nghia Architects has created an impressive welcome center for the Grand World Phu Quoc. Sustainability is at the heart of the Vietnamese firm's design philosophy and this project is the culmination of its use of bamboo. Combining arches, domes, and grids, the firm has created a centerpiece for the resort with a design rooted in the country's culture.

With a footprint of over 15,000 square feet, the center cuts an imposing figure and is immediately noticeable as guests enter the resort area. Charged with designing a structure that embodies Vietnamese culture, the firm concentrated on two traditional symbols—the lotus and the bronze drum.

To put together the welcome center, the architects harnessed the knowledge they have cultivated when using bamboo in previous projects. They used a hybrid system with interlocking layers to create a stable structure that also feels open and allows natural light to filter in. Incredibly, all the bamboo is held together using only ropes and pins.

Interior of Welcome Center at the Grand World Phu Quoc

“The transparency of the space with the surrounding grid system, along with the arch pathway throughout the whole structure, link the inside and the outside,” shares the firm. “The light comes in beautifully and, along with the natural color of bamboo, creates a warm and intimate atmosphere, even though the structure is very open in terms of airflow.”

Within this precise grid, a lotus and drum have been sculpted using arches and domes. This contrast of soft and hard edges gives an element of surprise to people entering the space. And at night, when the structure is lit from within, a soft glow enhances the space and allows for a different perspective on the construction.

All told, the Grand World Phu Quoc Welcome Center is a stunning showcase for the architectural possibilities of bamboo. And it has allowed Vo Trong Nghia Architects to once again show that this low-cost, sustainable material can work well in the creation of cutting-edge, contemporary architecture.

America’s First Carbon-Positive Hotel Opening in Denver Is Inspired by Colorado’s Native Trees Populus Carbon Positive Hotel in Denver

Denver will soon be home to America's first carbon-positive hotel. Developed by Urban Villages and designed by Studio Gang, Populus is a modern 265-room hotel that will open in late 2023. For the design, Studio Gang took inspiration from the patterns of Colorado's native Aspen trees, with the building's windows mimicking the trees' distinctive “Aspen Eyes.”

Situated in downtown Denver, the hotel will achieve its carbon-positive status thanks to its sustainable design and a unique off-site project. The hotel has committed to planting enough trees to represent over 5,000 acres of forest. This will offset an embodied carbon footprint equivalent to nearly 500,000 gallons of gas and remove additional carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

“We’ve created Populus to be a catalyst for change and to meet the increasing preference by today’s consumers to travel responsibly, experience places in an authentic way, and connect more deeply with nature and each other,” says Jon Buerge, Chief Development Officer and Partner at Urban Villages. “An earth emergency demands that we strengthen our influence, and Populus is just the beginning.”

Populus is already off to a positive start, right from construction. Using low-carbon concrete, high-recycle content materials, and minimizing waste are all helping the hotel reach its carbon-positive goal. There is also no planned on-site parking, which will encourage visitors to take public transportation or use existing structures. This saves the hotel from having to build a parking garage, which requires the use of materials rich in carbon.

Interior Render of the Populus Hotel in Denver by Studio Gang

When thinking about the look of the hotel, Studio Gang turned to nature for its design inspiration. And the building's unique windows, not only recall the pattern of the Aspen tree but also help its energy efficiency. The “lids” over each window provide interior shade, which improves energy use. They also carefully funnel away rainwater to keep the building looking pristine.

As a benefit to guests, each room will have incredible views and the windows transform into seats or desks that invite them to enjoy the great outdoors—even when they're inside.

The hotel will also include a rooftop restaurant and bar that overlooks the mountains and city skyline, with the intent to immerse guests in nature. The rooftop will be open to the public and will be filled with regional vegetation, serving as a lush place for the community to socialize.

“We’ve designed Populus to be a new destination in downtown Denver that combines these environmental and social ambitions,” shared Jeanne Gang, founder of Studio Gang. “With its distinctive aspen eye windows, the building cultivates a lively pedestrian scene in its neighborhood, while simultaneously connecting you with views of the natural wonders beyond the city limits.”

When it opens in Denver in 2023, Populus with be the first carbon-positive hotel in the United States.

Turtle-Shaped Yacht Is a Supersized Floating City That Houses 60,000 People Pierpaolo Lazzarini Floating City

Italian designer Pierpaolo Lazzarini is back with another incredible yacht concept. After his swan-shaped superyacht, Lazzarini has taken things up a notch with a turtle-shaped floating city that he describes as a terayacht. Called Pangeos, this itinerant floating city can house up to 60,000 people at sea and includes multiple commercial and entertainment spaces.

Various hotels, shopping centers, casinos, sports centers, and parks will give everyone aboard plenty to do when they aren't lounging by the pool or getting sun on the rooftop terrace of their villa. Pangeos will also have ship and aircraft ports in order for people to come and go as they please, even while the city is at sea.

The terayacht is appropriately named after Pangea, the prehistoric supercontinent. With that in mind, Lazzarini designed a futuristic concept for a super-sized city on the water. Pangeos stretches out 1,800 feet long and is 2,000 feet at its widest point. If built, it would be the world's largest floating structure.

Pierpaolo Lazzarini Pangeos Terayacht

And since Lazzarini would like to see the concept come to life, the designer is also cognizant that something this large would also need a custom-built shipyard. The proposed terashipyard would provide direct access to the sea and include a dam infrastructure that would flood, allowing the terayacht to float and depart for open water.

The terayatch would be equipped with nine electric engines, each capable of 16,800 horsepower. While sailing, the large wings will gain energy from the braking of the waves, making it capable of cruising in perpetuity. This means no messy emissions out at sea. The rooftop area lined with solar panels will ensure that the city's electrical needs are met using clean energy.

The Lazzarini Design Studio would love to see Pangeos become a reality, envisioning Saudi Arabia as the perfect destination for the mega-city. They estimate that it would take $8 billion and eight years to make this dream a reality. To that end, they have created an NFT crowdfunding initiative where people can purchase virtual spaces on the watercraft.

Not only will this give access to the Pangea Metaverse, which is set to launch in 2023, but the purchase will also act as a property deposit in case of construction.

Just off Orlando’s busy International Drive sits popular tourist attractions such as Universal Orlando Resort, convention centers, Disney World, mini golf parks, and outlet malls. Accommodations along this strip of prime real estate include Harris Rosen’s Rosen Inn International, Rosen Inn, and Rosen Centre Hotel which house thousands of short-term visitors every year. It’s sometimes easy to forget that in the middle of so much tourism, there are residents that call Orlando home.

One suburb that quietly sits in the shadows of these colossal tourist attractions is Tangelo Park, an orange grove-turned-residential community in the 50s for workers of the Martin Marietta plant and McCoy Air Force Base. In the past, this isolated community had very few services or transit options for residents. The community struggled with high crime rates, poor school attendance, property devaluation, and was riddled with drug problems that one resident explained were so bad that “you couldn’t even walk to the store, that’s how bad it was.” Education in Tangelo Park struggled as well; the high school graduation rate was around 30 percent.

Rosen grew up in a poor slum of Manhattan’s Lower East Side in the 40s and 50s as the descendant of Russian Jewish immigrants. He didn’t see anything wrong with how he, his family, and his friends lived until a tourist remarked, “So this is how they live.” He didn’t know what that meant. “Mom had to explain to us that not everyone lives this way,” he says. “And if we didn’t want to live here for the rest of our lives, we had to work hard in school and get a good education.”

Taking that advice, he received a bachelor’s degree in hotel administration from Cornell University and went on to have a successful career working for Disney and subsequently in his own ventures. “Epiphany might be too strong of a word…it was more of a voice. A feeling that ‘now is the time.’” says Rosen. “You’ve achieved more success than you ever imagined. It’s time now to recognize that you’ve been blessed…to be thankful and to share your good fortune with others.”

Community leaders met with Rosen and the Orange County School Board superintendent in 1993 to discuss a possible solution to these growing issues in Tangelo Park. In just an hour, with financial support guaranteed by Rosen, they developed the Tangelo Park Program (TTP). As detailed on their website, “at no cost to its citizens,” the program offers free preschool for every Tangelo Park 2-to-4 year old and “parenting classes and vocational or technical opportunities for parents with children in school.” As well, TTP gives free college tuition, room, board, and living expenses for every Tangelo Park high school graduate who is accepted to a vocational school, community college, or public university in Florida.

In the 29 years that TTP has been active, the Tangelo Park community has experienced exceptional improvement. The elementary school is now a grade-A school and the high school has a nearly 100 percent graduation rate. Over 200 students have earned their Rosen full-ride scholarships, and many of those high school graduates have been a part of the program from the very beginning. “I was part of the first generation of pre-K children in the Tangelo Park Program. Now I’m about to be the first generation of my family to go to college,” says Antionette Butler, a senior at Dr. Phillips High School.

Donna Wilcox, another Harris Rosen Scholarship recipient, earned a bachelor’s degree from UCF using her full-ride. She then went on to earn an M.A. from the University of Georgia. “When people have the resources to go and succeed, there’s a ripple effect,” she says. “It becomes generational. No one in my family ever went to college before, but now, my baby sister can’t even picture a life without college. My mother even went back and got her degree. I showed her that she could do it.”

Captain Al Rollins of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department says that he has seen the Tangelo Park community “grow,” “thrive,” and “prosper.” He says, “I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that Mr. Rosen has given hope—hope for the future…and the future obviously starts with the kids.”

With so many success stories, an entire community forever changed, and millions of dollars given, Rosen was asked if he ever planned to stop financially backing the program. “I will be involved in the program until Tangelo Park is a gated community and the average home is selling for $1 million. Then I’m gone.”

In 1993, the small Orlando suburb of Tangelo Park struggled with high crime rates, low high school graduation rates, and drug problems. Harris Rosen, having had much success in his business ventures thanks to the great education he received, stepped in to help his neighbors.

$5-Billion Moon-Shaped Hotel in Dubai Will Let You Experience Outer Space on Earth Moon World Resort in Dubai

Dubai is known for its extravagant architecture and, if Moon World Resorts has its way, a new hotel is set to reshape the most populous city in the UAE. The Canada-based company plans to build four MOON resorts, with the first designated for Dubai. The 735-foot-tall replica of the Moon will include all the amenities one would expect from a luxury resort, as well as special experiences meant to replicate a visit to Earth's satellite.

The $5 billion project would feature both a “lunar colony” and “lunar surface” experience intended to bring space tourism down to Earth. According to the company's founders, Sandra Matthews and Michael Henderson, the resort could accommodate up to 10 million visitors a year once completed. The lunar colony alone has capacity for 2.5 million guests a year, and it's even projected to include a training platform for space agencies and astronauts.

Of course, MOON is still a resort and, as such, there will be plenty for guests to experience and enjoy. The resort will include a nightclub, an event center that will hold up to 5,000 guests, a spa-wellness center, a jazz piano lounge, and a multi-level lounge based on an alien spacecraft. A large convention center is intended to attract exhibitors in the technology and space fields.

MOON will also include 144 luxury units for purchase as part of a private residence program. Each 2,000-square-foot villa comes with a lifetime membership to MOON that comes with exclusive privileges.

While official plans in Dubai are being finalized, the company estimates that it would take two years to construct this unique resort. “From an architectural, engineering, and design perspective, MOON can be built,” Henderson shares.

This is not the first time that Moon World Resorts has made a splash. In 2021, the company announced that they were planning on bringing MOON to Las Vegas. At the time, Henderson shared that he and Matthews first came up with the concept in 2000 and that “the objective was to develop an authentic, mega-scale reproduction of planet Earth's Moon, incorporating the world's largest sphere.”

Though it does not appear that the Las Vegas project is moving forward, we're looking forward to seeing if MOON can take hold in Dubai.

A Canadian company is looking to bring their MOON resort, which includes a lunar colony experience, to Dubai.

When you spend the day hiking in the national parks, it's always nice to have a cozy place to relax after a long day. If you're headed to Yosemite National Park, you can find that in the Château du Sureau in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It’s a 9-acre castle resort that’s 16 miles from Yosemite and boasts 10 guest bedrooms along with the private two-bedroom Villa du Sureau, a separate accommodation on the property.

The Château du Sureau bills itself as a “European escape in California,” and you'll feel like you're stepping inside of a Parisian-style manor. The rooms in the main house have eclectic decor that’s luxurious yet rustic. Stylish seating and small art objects along with exposed wood ceiling beams will at once transport you to another world while keeping you grounded to enjoy the gorgeous scenery surrounding you.

No two rooms are the same, but many have private balconies and wood-burning fireplaces. But for the ultimate getaway, look to the Villa du Sureau. Within the 2,000 square feet of space it has two bedrooms along with a sitting salon, a library, marble baths, and a dining and wet bar.

Guests of both the villa and château have access to the finer things that the hotel offers. This includes dining at The Elderberry House, a restaurant that uses ingredients from local farms and seasonal harvests. In addition to the restaurant, there is the cozy Cellar Bar that has classic cocktails and an extensive wine list. The Spa du Sureacu is also on-site to offer wellness treatments that are “enhanced by traditional European elements.” After a day at Yosemite National Park, the Hiker’s Repose massage sounds just like what the body needs.

Enjoy a Virtual Tour of Architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s Lost ‘Imperial Hotel’

Legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright left this earth in 1959 with a legacy that included over 1,000 designs. Some of his creations remain the most iconic buildings in cities across the world. However, some of the architect's ambitious projects were either never realized or demolished. These include the magnificent Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, Japan, which stood from 1923 to 1967. While it no longer stands, a project by the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust entitled Frank Lloyd Wright: The Lost Works allows viewers a bird's eye tour through the hotel.

Wright's design was one in a succession of impressive hotels which have occupied the site. The previous Imperial Hotel was built in 1890 and devastated by fire in 1922. Wright's design replaced it, defying at least two earthquakes to open in 1923. A multi-level design merging the aesthetic traditions of the East and West, the hotel was a monument to innovative design. Unfortunately, it was not very comfortable. A 1925 article described it as “a hundred years ahead of the age in its architectural features and fifty years behind in many things which make for the comfort of its patrons.”

With small rooms, no air conditioning, and a sinking foundation, the hotel was eventually demolished in 1967. It was replaced by another imperial hotel, this time a high rise. Now, that building is currently in the process of being replaced by a new design set to debut in 2036.

While a Frank Lloyd Wright building may seem like something to preserve forever, some strains of Japanese architectural tradition are known for cycling buildings with generations in a beautiful story of life. But now architectural buffs can explore these lost hallways through “drone” footage created from Wright’s original plans, drawings, and old photos. Stroll the halls and imagine yourself as a guest in this legendary hotel.

Frank Lloyd Wright's Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, Japan, was demolished in 1967, but you can tour it through this virtual video.

Many of us yearn for the time when air travel meant luxury. Today's cost-cutting measures have led to cramped flights and it seems harder than ever to fly in style, but one science-lover is giving us hope that things might soon change. With his incredible Sky Cruise concept, Hashem Al-Ghaili has proposed a whole new way to travel.

Instead of taking to the seas, his cruise hovers in the air. Al-Ghaili's incredible concept video shows an enormous plane inspired by a drawing that art director Tony Holmsten did over a decade ago. In it, we see the Sky Cruise, which can hold up to 5,000 people and spend years in the air thanks to its use of nuclear fusion. Al-Ghaili's ability to animate the concept and bring it to life is amazing. The video is truly a great sales pitch for the type of luxury vacation that you never knew you needed.

“I believe the current flying experience has become tiresome and outdated,” Al-Ghaili explains. “It is time for new innovations, that make our flight experiences more comfortable. I have always been a fan of Studio Ghibli. Castle in the Sky is one of my favorite movies where we see massive flying ships with people living inside.”

Sky Cruise has plenty of observation decks to take in the views of the sky or even watch the aurora borealis like never before. Guests and supplies will be whisked to the Sky Cruise from airports around the world, as there is landing space for commercial and private jets.

Inside, Al-Ghaili shows a world of luxury with magnificent food and plush interiors. There is even a state-of-the-art medical facility on board to cater to guests' health needs. While sky hotels have been proposed in the past and are often featured in science-fiction, the realism of Al-Ghaili's video has stirred up quite a reaction.

Al-Ghaili is confident that we are on the cusp of technology that could make this dream a reality. “I do believe that the Sky Cruise (Skytanic or Flytanic) could someday roam our skies,” he posted on Facebook. “Small nuclear reactors that can power airplanes are expected to be ready by [the] 2030s. With just a few tweaks to the design, nuclear fusion, and proper aerodynamics, the Sky Cruise could someday take off and carry thousands of passengers above the clouds.”

Since the video has gone viral, there has been enthusiasm, as well as criticism about the aerodynamics of the plane and its ability to fly. It's all feedback that Al-Ghaili is grateful for. “I want to reiterate that it’s just a concept,” he states. “I’m happy to see that it has stirred a lot of discussions and made you take a moment to dream of a future where such stuff could exist. Regardless of its feasibility, we humans should never stop dreaming.”

Sky Cruise is a floating hotel that can carry up to 5,000 people and stay airborne for years.

These Futuristic Floating Hotel Suites Are Completely Solar-Powered Design Concept of a Pearlsuite Community

Have you ever wished your day at the beach didn't have to end with the sunset? That you could just go to sleep right on the water? Enter Pearlsuites, the futuristic floating hotel suites designed by Pierpaolo Lazzarini of Lazzarini Design Studio. The conceptual designs are circular pods that are reminiscent of UFOs, but, instead of hovering in the air, they float on the surface of the water. Each unit includes all the same amenities as a hotel room and is 100% solar-powered, creating enough energy for air conditioning, lighting, refrigeration, and other appliances.

Pearlsuites are designed for Jet Capsule, an Italian water mobility brand whose vision is to bring the heights of road and air travel luxury to the water, sustainably. From the top-specs flagship version of Pearlsuites, to a simplified, open version for beach clubs, the concept intends to introduce a brand-new niche into the seaside hospitality market. The floating suites would allow beach resorts to do the seemingly impossible: establish or expand their number of rooms in a matter of weeks, with zero carbon footprint, zero infrastructures, and zero land occupied, all at a low implementation cost. The units are customizable and, if anchored, multiple units clustered together could become a floating resort.

Pearlsuite

Each Pearlsuite measures 7 meters (almost 30 feet) in diameter and offers 1 meter of surrounding walkable area, depending on the version of the design. They are constructed around an enforced main shell, connected with the circular hull. Available space in the hull offers storage for additional power sources and systems. In addition, the suites can be equipped with a gyroscope stabilizer system or a fuel cell hydrogen generator in order to produce energy onboard, ensuring energy is available regardless of the weather.

As far as mobility goes, the suites can also be equipped with an electric engine that allows them to cruise at 5 knots (about 6 miles per hour) from point A to B, and position themselves, thanks to an advanced GPS positioning system and autopilot features. Imagine coasting over to the floating bar, or meeting up with friends in another suite.

Pearlsuites are just one of many innovative designs by Lazzarini Design Studio. Scroll down to learn more about the Pearlsuites concept, and check out the other sustainable floating architecture designs on its website.
